Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Mary Lambert premieres the video for her new single, “Know Your Name,” today on Refinery29. Watch it HERE.
The “Know Your Name” video was inspired by Lambert’s assistant suggesting that the lyric “I probably should know our name” could be a reference to an arcade game’s “High Score” screen. The clip, which was directed by Erix Arocha, finds the cast duking it out over various games and culminates in Lambert’s showdown with Grey’s Anatomy’sSara Ramirez over an air hockey table.
“As I was conceptualizing the video, I had just read Ready Player One, which is a fantastic novel by Ernest Cline,” Lambert says. “The story is packed with ’80s references and a ton of video game knowledge, so I knew I wanted the premise to be arcade-based. I have always wanted to have a video with a bunch of badass femmes in it, and I thought pairing a babe squad with video games would be so much fun, kind of like Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’, but nerdier and queer as hell. The other main thing I kept circling back to was that it needed to be trans-inclusive, and that each actor/character needed be involved in the creative process. ”
“Know Your Name” is featured on Lambert’s new EP, Bold, which is now available via all digital service providers. Fully funded via Kickstarter within eight hours, Bold marks the Seattle-based Lambert’s return to being an independent artist after she amicably parted ways with Capitol Records last year. Describing the EP as “feel good queer-pop,” Lambert wrote and self-produced three of Bold’s seven tracks entirely on her own, and wrote two with hit songwriter-producer Toby Gad (Beyoncé, Demi Lovato) and Tobias Karlsson (Adam Lambert, Max Martin). Lambert plans to tour behind Bold this fall. Tour dates will be announced soon.
