INTERVIEW: January

Hi January, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! I’ve been very well thank you, promoting the album since it’s release in January.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Whelmed”?

I chose to name the album after this song as it sums up the overall sentiment of it. Whelmed is an old sea term meaning to capsize or submerge in water, in this case being submerged in feelings for another person. “the water, don’t matter, I’m drowning in you”

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, it was meeting and falling in love and not only feeling consumed by those feelings but also taking on all of the emotions, pain and hopes etc.., of the other person as well. Like being in a sea of the other person.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, I’ve just released it. Here is the YouTube link.

How was the recording and writing process?

Normally my writing process is quite isolated but this was a collaborative and all instrumentals and my vocals were recorded in Copenhagen. It was magical being there for the sessions watching and hearing it come alive with the Copenhagen Cello Quartet and other amazing instrumentalists. And Steffen Aaskoven and Thor Finland, the producers, really know how to get what they want to hear out of me vocally, it’s amazing working with them.

Does Bjork and Kate Bush play a direct role in your music?

Not Kate Bush, though I appreciate when I am compared to her, she’s a legend. Bjork does in inspiring me to write what I want to write and sing what I want to sing, not compromise my vision.

What was it like to work with Cello Quartet and how did they come on board?

They are an incredible group of guys!! They have all known each other since they were kids so they have this amazing comradery and they are each so brillaintly talented in their own way. They came on board because Henrik, who is the 1st principal cellist in the Danish National Symphony Orchestra had worked with Steffen before on his last project Bliss. It’s an honor to have them on the album, I hope I can always work with them.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I haven’t written anything knew lately, all the focus has been the release of this album and also doing videos but I am very much looking forward to starting to write again this summer.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Nothing yet.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, we’re starting rehearsals in Copenhagen this summer as all the instrumentalists are there so our first few shows will be there as well.

What else is happening next in January’s world?

Working on new music and the live shows and also going to the rain forest in Borneo to visit Orangutan Foundation International. The Orangutans are going extinct do to Palm Oil consumption, trying to do my part in raising awareness about that and the extinction crisis.
