Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Tidalwave”?
Tidalwave is a song that we wrote back in 2012 that we included in our e.p TRANSRADICALMASH. We tweaked it a bit and thought it was strong enough to be in our first full length.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
We actually were just messing around and the lyrics sort of wrote themselves. It’s one of those instances where you try to not take yourself seriously and end up writing something really fun. We constantly seek those moments.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Our video was just released through Sony Records/ The Orchard on May 11th of this year.
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording and writing process was long due to the fact that we knew that our first full length needed the most time and attention that we could give. It had its fun moments and its struggles but in the end , the whole project turned out to be exactly what we wanted.
What role does Chicago plays in your music?
Chicago has always been this symbol of pride that we carry with us through and through. We understand the struggles that permeate throughout our very diverse city and we want to shine a light on what it means to be proud of where you come from and to always represent your roots. We look at Chicago as an underdog city. Always being compared to other metropolitan areas and what it may lack. Being four Latino brothers playing rock music in a scene that is very much dominated by white males, is something that makes us feel that we have to work that much harder. We have to work harder to even be heard let alone respected and recognized. And we are doing just fine.
How does all your different musical backgrounds tends to come to together into one?
We all grew up together in the same house, so at the beginning we all were listening to the same exact things. That is where we developed a foundation. It wasn’t until high school where the tastes started to diversify and to no surprise, all of us learned to accept our new musical discoveries. We are very open and have always been accepting to change so sharing our influences has always been something that is very second nature.
How’s your new album coming along?
Our first full length was released in September of last year. We are currently in the process of writing new material to follow up our last release.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Our first full length was self titled.
What made you want to seek for new direction with this record?
The direction we took for this album was just organic. We didn’t have a certain direction as to what the album should sound like.
How did you choose which styles to incorporate?
When it comes to incorporating styles, we never consciously make a decision to go a certain way. We accept anything and everything that comes out of us as expression and honor whatever it may be. For example, our single Tidalwave has a surf rock vibe to it and our song Deep Red Love has a more R&B/Sade feel to it. Both of those feelings are always inside of us, among countless others, and that is what makes it easy for us to be able to jump from style to style.
Any plans to hit the road?
We are actually going on a Midwest tour starting on July 19th.
What else is happening next in Avantist’s world?
Becoming a household name.
