Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! We’ve been well, thank you! Very busy but it’s been a good kind of busy! We hope you’re well?
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “A Little Sooner”?
Dan: A Little Sooner is about feeling like your friends don’t notice how you’re feeling. That you’re missing the person you’re in love with, and going out and getting drunk to forget about it. It’s also about never having much luck, feeling that you’re a loser and wishing you weren’t, whilst also wishing that things will get better soon!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Dan: I’d say it was more a build up of things rather than one specific event. It’s kinda just an outburst of what I was feeling at the time.
How was the film experience?
Jason: Enjoyable! Ian Coulson is amazing to work with! I was quite put off by the thought of having our shows filmed because I thought it would distract from the overall performance if I was worrying about getting good footage but I barely noticed that Ian was there! James thinks he’s a ninja!
The single comes off your new EP In The Back Of My Mind – what’s the story behind the title?
Jason: It’s a repeated lyric in a track from the EP called ‘North/South Divide’. It references how I was dwelling on my insecurities a fair amount whilst writing this record.
How was the recording and writing process?
Jason: The writing process was quite organic! Dan and I write most of the material together and I’ll go away and make demos. We wrote A Little Sooner prior to hitting the road last year, North South Divide whilst on the road and the rest fell into place quite quickly after that, Day After Day being the exception. I wrote that a week or so before we hit the studio! I had a flash of inspiration and strongly felt it belonged on the record. We more or less finished writing the song in the studio! Ian Sadler is great to work with and a hummus connoisseur!
Becky: We recorded in Kent and we all stayed in a house together for a week in January – it was probably the most intensive amount of time we’ve spent together as a band apart from our first tour in September – it was also interesting to learn who remembers to flush the toilet and who doesn’t…
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Jason: I always write based on real life experiences. I feel like it makes the songs more genuine and relatable that way.
Any plans to hit the road?
Becky: We’re touring in August – from Friday 4th to Wednesday 16th – we’ll be playing in Scotland for the first time so that’ll be pretty cool!
What else is happening next in MAYPINE’s world?
Jason: We just signed to Disconnect Disconnect Records to release the EP. We intend to hit the road hard in support of it and play as many shows with as many different bands as possible!
Hi Sal, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? Hey RJ! Not bad at all, …
