Hi Vents, thanks for having us! We’ve been very well thanks, hiding in the studio currently but for a very good reason! How have you been?
For those who don’t know Tors yet, who are you and how would you describe your sound?
We are a Devon based indie/folk band who sing four part harmonies and can guess the weight of any Uncle presented to us. Our sound is a tricky one to describe (since we’re probably quite biased) but we try to merge our live instrumentation with some more electric sounds and beats and our songs are all rooted in strong melodic hooks and narrative storytelling. We were recently reviewed as sounding like ‘Fleet Foxes meets The Killers’ – we’ll definitely take that.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Merry Go Round”?
Sure thing. Merry Go Round is about a girl used to know, we’d only ever see her when we were out drinking and that’s how we became friends. She was sweet but totally lost, she’d put this pressure on herself to make some kind of perfection and it would spoil any relationship she ever had. She once turned up at our flat on Valentine’s Day and completely broke down, she said it was like she was spinning so fast she couldn’t find a face in the blur. It was sad to watch someone become so consumed by the idea of ‘the one’ that they missed out on everything else.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The girl mentioned above.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We do have a live video we’re releasing next week I believe, we found our way to this amazing forest next to a shooting range – so it took a while getting a take that wasn’t punctuated by various gun shots, but it was worth it.
How was the recording and writing process?
We wrote the song while we were on a songwriting exchange in Nashville actually, which was a lot of fun and probably inspired the opening riff quite a lot (country vibes!). We recorded it in Devon along with some others – we took a couple of weeks out last Summer, emptied our Dad’s shed and filled it with our gear. We basically locked ourselves in and didn’t come out till everything was done, it was probably the most fun we’ve had as a band to date.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Absolutely you can, it’s coming along very nicely actually, we’re very excited for it. We’re going back to the Devon shed at the end of May to start recording, so not long now!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Any plans to hit the road?
Hopefully! We’ve got some very interesting things in the pipeline, but nothing we can really talk about yet! We’re doing plenty of festivals this Summer though, ‘Barn on the Farm’ being the one we’re most looking forward to, the lineup is mind blowing.
Why should people pay attention to Tors? What’s special about you?
The songs, most definitely! Although wewould say that wouldn’t we?
What else is happening next in Tors’ world?
Recording these new tracks in May and seeing if we can get Ainsely Harriot to be in our next video!
