Great! I am so excited to get the new album out there so I really appreciate your support.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single "Cigarettes"? Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
“Cigarettes is a song I wrote about my experience living and working in Los Angeles. I worked as a landscaper in Laurel Canyon so the song was written in and inspired by the area. It’s about me being young and figuring myself out in a big city. When I perform it live it really seems to strike a chord with people in the audience so we decided this would be a focus track for the release.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, I filmed a video with a good friend of mine in Los Angeles, stay tuned!
The single comes off your new album Artifacts – the story behind the title?
The album is called Artifacts because these songs are “artifacts” from important periods of my life. Although, the tunes are highly personal I have a good feeling that people will be able to relate with a lot of the things I’m singing about like budding relationships, heartbreak, personal exploration, personal frustration, and self love.
How was the recording and writing process?
The album was recorded and written all over the country in Chicago, Vermont and Denver, really wherever I was touring or traveling at the time. My songwriting reflects my life so if I’m growing as a person my music is usually getting better as well. I was adventuring a lot during the writing of this record so the songs were inspired by traveling the country and some time I spent in Mexico.
What role does Denver plays in your music?
Denver is central to this record because it’s my home base! I’m most definitely a product of the Denver community. Also, a bulk of the album was recorded in Denver with Joe Richmond who is incredible at guiding artists toward their ultimate vision. There’s also a song on the record called “The New Colorado Anthem” which I’m hoping will one day be an official anthem of for the state!
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
As an artist I’m inspired by different environments. I love being surrounded by nature but I also love being in different parts of a city – they both offer so much for me creatively. Essentially, as long as my head is clear, there’s inspiration everywhere.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, I have several shows lined up across the country including NYC, Evanston, Denver, Fort Collins and more being added in support of the release. You can check out all my show dates at www.zachheckendorf.com
