INTERVIEW: Tom Walker

Hi Tom, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m all good thanks, away on tour the minute, just arrived in Amsterdam 5 minutes ago, about to head out for a little wonder.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Blessings”?

It’s about me and my mates, we all live together in London, it’s pretty expensive living here, we can’t always afford to go out at the weekend. So we bring the party to us at home. It’s the little things, a couple of cans, invite some people over, blast the tunes. I used to say “we don’t have much but what we do have we make the most of” but really we are incredible blessed just to have each other, the rest is just a bonus.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It was after a little house gathering, but the inspiration for the song came from a whole year of living with my mates.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We are working on the video as we speak, it’s going to be class, it’s being directed by a lad called Danny Chan, we have worked together before on one of my songs “Fly Away With Me” he’s a fantastic director. Can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Why naming the EP after this track in particular?

I think it’s easy to forget to be thankful for things, especially in the music business. That’s why the E.P is called Blessings, sometimes I need a little reminder.

How was the recording and writing process?

Amazing! I wrote the song with help from two of my very talented friends Jez Ashurst and Mark Vallance, it was super easy to write and we had a laugh doing it, something you don’t get in every writing session.

What was it like to work with Jim Abbiss and how did that relationship develop?

It’s been an eye opening experience, Jim is a real talent.. he does things properly. We managed to get an amazing mix of organic and digital sounds. We’ve been working together for a while now, it’s a joy to work with him and his studio is one of my favorite places to go and make a record.

How much did he influence the record?

He did what I have been struggling to do for over two years now, he managed to help us find a sound, a sound that isn’t like any one else’s. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the EP we have done together. We managed to properly capture what me and the band do live inside a venue, not an easy task.

What aspect of your own persona did you get to explore on this record?

Just me, myself and I.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Just life, it sounds like a cliché but I write about whatever is going on around me. I find it difficult to write about things I can’t relate to.

Any plans to hit the road?
