INTERVIEW: Hillary Capps

Hi Hillary, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! I’ve been great! I’m excited to have some new original material out in the world! It’s been a while in the making. I’m also excited that summer is almost here, thank goodness 🙂

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Last Call”?

“Last Call” is a song about learning to listen to yourself in a world that is constantly telling you how to act and feel. It’s titled “Last Call” because there is a sense of urgency in the lyrics, in the tone of the song, and in the world right now.

I co-wrote the song with my partner Anthony Farina about a year ago. He was very much a part of the production process as well, demoing out the original with me, and playing guitar and bass on the master.

The song is produced by John Roberts, with additional production by Peter Wise and Trevor Brown.  Mastered by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound NY.

“Last Call” is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Soundcloud and more. Plus (for a limited time) snag a free download on Bandcamp (!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I think it was more of a collection of events, or a state of mind. Living in New York as an artist can be very challenging and confusing. It takes time to figure out who you are and how to best present your (true) self.

I will say, there was one specific event regarding the title of the song. In the Fall, I was thinking about changing the title to something else. The same day that I was attempting to come up with a list of other options, I got an email from Bernie Sanders titled Last Call (as in Last Call for action). I took that as a little sign.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

No plans for a Last Call music video at the moment. However, I am releasing a second single in a few weeks, called “Magic” and we’ve already filmed a video for that 🙂

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing and recording process was great. It took some time, because it happened in pieces and there were several different iterations of the track. Long story short, it was a lovely team effort between Anthony Farina, John Roberts and Peter Wise. It’s cool to think back on all of the different versions of the song. I’m very happy with where we landed.

What was it like to work with John Roberts and how did that relationship develop?

It was lovely. I look forward to working with him again. I met John through Anthony. He had some ideas for a few of my songs and wanted to start with Last Call. He has a killer vocal booth / mic / plug ins. As a singer I thought he was really great at directing me during vocal takes. I think we banged out all the vocals in about 4 hours on a Sunday!

John just launched his own Label, Villainy Records. Lots of exciting things in the works for him I’m sure.

How much did he influence the song?

The lyrics and main melody of the song were solid and didn’t change in the process. What he did influence greatly was the arrangement of the song, and the overall sound and vibe of the production (key!).

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

YES! I wanted to start with a few singles and see the reaction, then dive back into recording. My second single “Magic” comes out in a few weeks, to follow up “Last Call”. I have enough new songs for a full album, but I may start with an EP this fall. Stay tuned!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet!

Any plans to hit the road?

Staying local (NYC) for most of the summer, working on some LA shows and possibly a regional tour for the fall.

What else is happening next in Hillary Capps’ world?

Single Release + Music Video for second Single “Magic” – a song about having faith without a rulebook.

Stay tuned for summer show announcements.
