PREMIERE: Chelsea Shag Releases New Music Video

As we continue with our premiere week, we are pleased to team up with the young Canadian singer-songwriter Chelsea Shag who is back with the video for her latest upbeat and overall catchy single “One Kiss”.

“One Kiss” showcases a meaningful connection that exposes a powerful message amongst the current political climate and issues of equality. Chelsea describes the concept behind the video as “showing that love comes in all shapes and sizes, whether you are a woman who loves a man, a man who loves a man, or woman who loves a woman, it is all beautiful and should be accepted and celebrated.” Shot in Atlanta, Georgia Chelsea was involved in every aspect of the video, from the original concept, to editing. The video stems from the meaning of the song, with Chelsea sharing that the song is “talking about the very first time you connect with someone, that first kiss where you can find out if the feelings are real… discovering if it is something that can go somewhere.”

Already a recognizable presence in the Atlanta music scene, Canadian-born and Atlanta-based Chelsea Shag, has become an invigorating and refreshing sound, solidifying her as an artist on the rise. Working with Madison Records and well-known music producer, Stefan Skarbek [Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen] to bring together her full-length album and begin to break through the feminine clichés and reinventing the image of females in the music industry.

In addition she sit with the magazine to talk about the single, video and more!

Hi Chelsea, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been feeling strange and wonderful and thrilled! Thanks for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “One Kiss”?

One Kiss was written in the basement of my mother’s home a few years back… I always kept it for when the right producer would meet it. I was madly infatuated with a friend who I just wanted to be closer to. The song comes from a very real place. I’m so happy with the way it turned out, and even though I can’t sing it to that one person anymore, I’m glad the inspiration was there.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Absolutely. Very excited to be sharing my music video out into the world here.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing came so easily for me as it should being so inspired with the lyrical content. I started with a drum machine and sung into a harmonized pedal. It came within a week or so. I record the ideas on voice memo and proceed to perfect the way I want it to sound. When we brought it in the studio years later, it came out fast and it felt surreal to be listening to it at such a polished level. Very happy with it.

What was it like to work with Stefan Skarbek and how did that relationship develop?

He just got it, you know? He understood than more than anything my voice should be the instrument that stands out. He made it come to life. He made it seem so easy, too. I really enjoyed hearing his stories about one my favorite artists, Amy Winehouse. What a treat it was.

How much did he influence the album?

He really knows how to work with a pop song. He took the songs I wrote and coated it with a clear, shiny polish. He didn’t get to work on all the songs I want for the album but I’m just glad we got to work on a few.

How’s your new album coming along?

Just the other day I wrote out all the songs I want featured in order. It makes me all giddy thinking about hitting the studio soon to record them all. It’s a very dynamic group of songs. You can’t put one genre on them.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I do have a release date in mind but usually things in the music business don’t go as planned. If not by the end of the year, spring of next year. I believe I already have the photo for my cover.

What other aspects of politics and society would you be exploring throughout the record?

There’s a theme of equality in my songs. Straight up LOVE. Everyone can relate to love. I’m a person who’s about your own independence, so you’ll feel that vibe, too. I want my music to make you feel good and I want it to inspire you to be yourself.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes. This summer I’ll do another run of the east coast. It’s all in the works right now.

What else is happening next in Chelsea Shag’s world?

I’m just shredding, writing, trying to keep up with myself. It’s an amazing ride. I can’t wait to see what reveals itself in the next year.
