INTERVIEW: Castell

Hi Castell, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, Thanks! All good here in Sunny Stockholm.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Superman”?

Sure, it was initially not the track I was supposed to release, but since the other track crashed the release of the same singer’s solo project – we had to come up with another song having another vocalist. So I dug up an old “test.mp3” file where a friend was singing (you can hear him on my other release ‘You got it wrong’) and I thought that it had something special, so with only a week to go until the release date, I composed it into a track. Hell of a week…

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Clubbing and DJing a lot gives you an insight and you see what works and what doesn’t amongst different crowds and lately I have been to a lot of urban hip hop clubs where people just disappear into the music and I thought I had to do something slower than the 128bpm to get people dancing in these places. So 108 bpm kind of became my new signature bpm and this track was born out of that.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

The ideas are endless with a title called ‘Superman’ – But we haven’t recorded anything so far, though I’m working with extremely talented people behind the camera, so stay tuned and there might be a little something!

How was the recording and writing process?

Superman was actually one of those tracks where the lyrics and vocal just came into place at once, it was like a freestyle that ended up being the finished version. We had a lot of fun on recording it as the vocalist sounds very Jamaican but he’s actually a half Swedish half Turkish doctor, believe it or not!

You are known for having worked under different aliases – does your approach changes with every moniker?

No not really, the thing that made me change from my former alias ‘SAL’ was because whenever someone asked me what my artist name was and tried to google it they said 2000 salsa-bands were found, but nothing made by me. So search optimization was crucial at that point since I was debuting with an original track. Hence CASTELL. So now I’m competing against the pen company Faber-Castell and some Spanish castles, but that’s ok in comparison.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I have a full schedule of tracks, so I’ll be able to keep the releases up with a new track every three months or so, one for each season. Something that you are able to dance too, very back-beat-summer vibes with a lot of different vocalists.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Next release will be in August, no particular date decided yet.

Any plans to hit the road?

Oh yes, no set dates or places yet thought as I’m in contact with agencies and are trying to figure out the best way to go.

What else is happening next in Castell’s world?

I’m currently cooped up in the studio producing a lot for different artists, Swedish HipHop/pop, English DnB/R&B, you name it. So besides CASTELL I’m going to release a whole other bunch of tracks. This month’s releases are coming from Malcolm B, Mayka – be sure to check it out!

We’re also a small team planning the next CASTELL release and everything around it with visuals, video and the whole theme, which is really exciting and I can’t wait to share it with you guys.
