Can you talk to us more about your single “Candles”?
Candles is a metaphor representing your life line or life energy. It burns bright when we are excited, having fun or doing something we enjoy. It dims whenever we are in a bad mood, feel down or depressed. The concept was making sure we are aware of the type of energies we keep around us because not everyone wants you to succeed.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
Definitely. 2015 was a rough patch for me financially because I was unaware of thetype of people I kept around me. They were constantly draining me mentally, financially, spiritually etc. Their moods were taking a toll on me to the point where I became cynical. When I decided to break free from those negative environments my life started to brighten, opportunities opened up for me and I started to enjoy life more. I lit a candle one day while I was relaxing and I turned my ceiling fan on extra high. I noticed the candle was still burning. At that moment, I put myself in that position despite the adversity and negativity my candle wasstill lit. That’s how the song came about.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Absolutely. I’m planning on releasing a video for every song on the EP being that it contains only 6 songs.
The single comes off your new album One Day At A Time – what’s the story behind the title?
I use to live ahead of myself meaning I use to focus on tomorrow and yesterday but failed to enjoy the present. I was always in a rush to make things happen instantly, I wanted my career to blow up right then and there. Days were passing me by and I couldn’t remember what I did the entire day because I wasn’t paying attention to the present. I forgot family birthdays, special events and even my own birthday at one point lol. I remember talking to my dad one day and he said ” things will happen on its own schedulejust relax and take itone day at a time.” From there, I started to slowly enjoy each day and lived in the moment. I learned the importance of taking a daily experience and use it as a teaching mechanism. With time we grow and get better if we choose to. Live life One Day At A Time.
How was the recording and writing process?
It took me roughly 6 months to finish the entire project. I wanted to make sure everything was air tight. Each song represents real life experiences that inspired me to write them. I actually recorded 12 songs but I wanted to trim the fat and deliver nothing but protein for the listener to digest. That was the best decision in my opinion because the project flows and is cohesive if you ask me lol.
What role does Detroit play in your music?
No matter where I go or what I do musically, that Detroit sound will always find a way to shine through. I grew up on old school Motown artists like The Four Tops, Temptations, Smokey Robinson etc. Additional sounds like J.Dilla, Slum Village and Dwele display that raw Detroit sound. Whether I like it or not, those sounds always resonate with me so I choose not fight it. You can tell on songs like ” Hip-Hop Back and Claimed It.”
What aspect of love and current events did you get to explore on this record?
I was able to meet new people and build valuable friendships that I believe will last a lifetime. To me, that’s love. Being able to go through life with people who enjoy it just as much as you do is truly a blessing.
Any plans to hit the road?
Eventually. Were in the works of putting together a local tour that will expand nationally when the time is right. I’ll definitely keep you posted.
What else is happening next in Shah33d’s world?
So much is in store I can’t even put it all on paper lol. It involves music of course, fitness and healthy living. I’m the type to divulge things when its about to happen rather than giving a heads up because like I stated before, everyone don’t want you to succeed. So stay tuned and I thank you for visiting Shah33d world.
