Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We’ve been incredible! We just got back from a 5 show tour with our friends Dynohunter. We played around the Southeast in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Savannah, Atlanta, and Dunedin. Met some great people and all of the shows were a blast.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Duality”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song? How was the recording and writing process?
Swain is actually our roommate. We moved up to Atlanta from Gainesville, FL a year and a half ago and got a house. We had just moved in and were working on a beat. We ran it up to Swain after working for about 45 minutes. His ideas instantly clicked with the track and started writing.
We had all been asking some of the questions present in the songs after our big move. It all came together very naturally. It was the quickest production of a song we’ve ever been a part of. The song was written and produced (minus some changes, mixing, and mastering) in about 2 hours. It was such a fluid flow and it expressed everything we were going through at the time naturally. Sometimes the writing process can just be magic!
How was the film experience?
Freezing! We shot in December. It took us a full day of shooting and about 4 months of planning. We scouted out the location and went there weekly for the 4 months leading up to the shoot to generate ideas and brainstorm.
The day of the shoot was an adventure. We had a few issues on the day of the shoot with the casting and had to do a little bit of improvisation on the spot. It ended up working out better than we planned.
We’re good friends with the director and videographer, Frank Murillo. He has been a fan as well and when we told him we wanted to make a video for “Duality,” he instantly got excited. He was a monumental part of the entire video process. Between helping us develop the visual concept, and managing a hectic shoot, Frank was a massive part of the video.
Have to give a shout out to Khaos Sama, the dancer from the video. It was so cold outside and he was an absolute trooper standing out there shirtless for the shoot.
What was it like to work with Swain and what did he brought up to the table?
Swain is wonderful to work with. We have a natural chemistry and have been friends for a long time. Sometimes, when you work with artists, they have a lot of small nit-picky changes they want to make before getting into the writing process. We’ve always thought it is best to get writing and keep the momentum moving before making any small, detailed changes. This always seems to produce the best results.
The track we initially gave Swain was not entirely fleshed out, but he worked with it and allowed for the momentum and magic to keep moving. We were able to build off what he wrote, flesh out the remainder of the beat, and then make some changes that would not have been possible had he waited to start writing.
It is amazing to work with vocalists and rappers that are able to look past minor details, find the full vision of the song, start working with you in a more collaborative way rather than having the producer write the beat, and having the singer/rapper just throw something on top. It felt like a group effort and I think that is present in the final product. The big picture comes first, the details can be filled in once the theme and vision are more concrete.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
We’re currently working on a few singles that we’ll be releasing over the next 6-8 months. We’ve got an album concept in mind that we’re planning on releasing in mid-2018. In the writing process right now. We will keep you updated as we make more progress.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’ll be heading to Denver in two weeks to play a few shows with our good friends in Dynohunter. After that, we’ll be playing at Disc Jam festival in Stephentown, NY in June. Also working on a few shows in NYC at the moment. We’ll keep you posted as we get them finalized 🙂
What else is happening next in Bells and Robes’ world?
Right now we’re working on a video for one of our new singles. Currently, we’ve been driving around Atlanta and scouring Google Maps in search of the perfect shooting locations. Hoping to have that completed by November. Between that, the album writing process, and our upcoming shows – we’re stacked with work and loving it.
