INTERVIEW: HMS Morris

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! We’ve been very well thanks, its been a big DIY week this week in the HMS Morris house, so we’re covered in paint and a bit smelly.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single Morbid Mind?

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well, I (Heledd) have a friend who quite enjoys reading into the history of serial killers, we we’re staying at her house in mid Wales after a gig months ago and looking around I realised how many books she has on the subject and it disturbed me a little and also inspired me to write the wrong and delve into my morbid side – we all have one!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There are indeed plans to release a video, it’s been pieced together slowly as we speak so hang tight for a few weeks for that.

How was the recording and writing process?

Our writing process has been the same since we formed, I write the bare bones of the track; lyrics, chords and any guitar solos and then Sam takes over and arranges it by adding all the synths and backing vocals and all the weird noises you find in a typical HMS Morris tune. We recorded the track in a small studio in Cardiff that we share with a few other musicians, its a really inspiring space with lots going on all the time. A musician called Rhodri Brooks appears on Morbid Mind – he’s the one with the lovely Richard Burton-esque voice doing some spoken word in the middle, he also shares the studio with us, you should check out his stuff.

Does the double single means we can we expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

There will be a new album, but not until 2018, its coming along slowly, we’re not going to rush it, we’d like to make some time this year for gigging as well.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No details yet I’m afraid!

Would both tracks serve as a sneak peek to the sound on the new material?

Yeah, I reckon. We keep developing as a band and get inspired by different genres and other bands constantly, I think that’s why there’s so much variation between Morbid Mind and Arth and I think you can expect a lot of variation between all the songs on future albums as well.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’d love to hit the road later in the year before Christmas, we’ll keep you up to date with any developments on that front!

What else is happening next in HMS Morris world?

DIY, lots of DIY and more new singles before the end of the year. I’d like to fit a holiday in there somewhere as well, I really don’t mind where.
