Today’s Humpy Day is filled with some amazing acts ranging from different genres and styles, to kick off our premiere week we are heading over to the UK where we find Of Empires who are back with the newest single “Soho,” an upbeat song that blends perfectly melodic vocals with guitar driven harmonies, reminiscent of other English bands such as Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys.
Of Empires are a four piece rock ‘n’ roll band from Brighton via Guernsey. Living on a tiny island such as Guernsey, music seemed like a sensible option to alleviate the boredom that often occurs in such a place. So one night a slightly worse for wear Jack (vocals) drunkenly stumbled across Matt (guitars), at a local festival, who posed the question, “Do you wanna join a rock n roll band?”. Needing little persuasion Jack replied “yes”. A quick poaching of drummer George from another local band and the rapid enlisting of bass player Liam, after the previous bassist did a runner just days before their first gig, Of Empires was born.
Fast forward a couple of years and O•E find themselves being hailed as winners of MT V Brand New Unsigned 2015, an accolade that has seen their video aired on MT V alongside rock heavyweights such as Kasabian and The Black Keys.
Most recently though Of Empires have been busy honing their craft at the world renowned Metropolis Studios, gracing the same room as many a legend, Jagger and Richards being a primar y example. After the initial awe of being in such a musical institution subsided, Of Empires set to work with critically acclaimed producer Ian Davenport.
Ian had been responsible for producing two of Of Empires favourite albums ‘Baby Darling Doll Face Honey’ and ‘Sweet Sour’ both by Band of Skulls. So it was somewhat of a no-brainer that they joined forces. Ian quickly settled the bands ner ves and got to work on recording their unique sound, although influences like the aforementioned Rolling Stones and The Doors are present, it’s Jacks somewhat sinister lyrics and the bands reverb drenched rock n roll that makes them such a stand out act today. Of Empires music is a reflection on society, a snap shot of the crazy world in which we live. Listen to the lyrics and you’ll notice recurring themes of sex, murder, corruption and love.
Of Empires are releasing the EP via new independent label Idle Times. The EP features 4 tracks from the Metropolis sessions, title track ‘See You With The Angels, Kid’ is accompanied by a beautifully cinematic video created by the bands creative director Josh Fletcher. Previous favourite ‘Baby Darlin’ Sugar’ will also feature as well as ‘Soho’ and ‘Lungs’ both of which are stand out tracks from the live show. The EP will be released May 2017.
