Hi Malea, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
All is good thank you.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not particularly…I think I was in a bit of a funk at the time-kind of autobiographical but with snapshots of other relationships I’ve been in and witnessed… I think I, like many other people, have had issues from childhood…and it can definitely set up the relationships you seek out..
For me the “You’ll never fix my heart” is the feeling that:
I can’t get rid of this emptiness-nothing is filling this up-no relationship-no booze-no sex –whatever it might be..
How was the film experience?
A big learning curve!. It was the first thing I’ve ever directed in my life… did it with my friend Owen Korb and it was his first directing experience as well..he is amazing with cameras… he was more the technical side and I was more the creative side.
How was the recording and writing process?
Really fun… wrote the song with Allison Jayne(aka FAN) and Dave Aude produced it…I came up with the first line:“She was a child ,child of a child” which is about my Mother who had me when she was too young. And it took off from there..the hardest thing for me when writing is just knowing exactly what I want to say and what I want to write about… It’s editing my mind and constant ideas and words in my head. Then I just recorded it at Dave’s.
What role does LA plays in your music?
Whevever I travel I’m always anxious to get back here..there’s so much going on-whatever your cup of tea is-this city has it..it’s really colorful-diverse-artisitic and I think there’s a real consciousness expansiveness going on here right now. Especially with the poltical climate and what’s happening in the world, it’s making people realize how interconnected we all truly are… it’s an exciting time to be here…
How does your classical and Broadway background influences your music and the other way around?
It definitely has given me some tools… I think its given me a deep appreciation for where we’ve come from… these composers left behind such great works of art for people to enjoy and make our lives better…
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes I’m currently working on an EP and videos for that EP.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Right now it’s looking like August 26.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ll definitely be playing shows in LA and we’ll see what happens in the next few months-it’s going to be a busy summer!!
What else is happening next in Malea’s world?
Besides working on this EP I’m also working on a film project for next year… and my favorite part of every day is being with my little girl!
