Home / Music / Artist Interviews / INTERVIEW: LA act Toyko

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Fantastic! Thanks for the love.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Like What I Like”?

When we first started the Toyko project, we made a conscious decision to only make music that makes us happy. “Like What I Like” is a reflection of that mentality – that no matter what you’re into, as long as you are enjoying yourself, that is the most important thing.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

We had been saying “I like what i like” to each other during the creation of our first few songs… So when we were first putting down starter ideas for this song, this came out organically. We decided to keep it as the main idea and wrote the rest of the song around it.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We have new artwork for the song that we are thrilled about! As for a video, we are waiting for a future release.

How was the recording and writing process?

This song started out as a simple beat with just piano and synth. Fairly quick after we starting thinking of concepts, we knew that “Like What I Like” would be the central idea. Everything else flowed around that fairly easily.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely! We’ve been writing almost non-stop since our first release. We plan on constantly dropping new material every month, and we also have an EP planned to release this summer.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The next single “you do.” will be out mid-May! As for the EP we have yet to lock down a title, but we know for sure it will be more ‘moody’ than our other material.

What other themes would you get to explore on this album?

I’m looking forward to showing more of a darker, introspective side on the EP. The songs touch on ideas such as seeing the beauty in conflict, and the push-and-pull interaction of intimate relationships.

Any plans to hit the road?

For the time being we’re focussed on creating as much music as possible and putting it out into the world. However we do hope to switch gears after a while and play out on the road.

What else is happening next in Toyko’s world?

We’ve got some very fun collaborations happening at the moment that I absolutely cannot wait to finish! Definitely looking forward to the summer season =)
