INTERVIEW: Fly By Midnight

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

J: Hey there, thanks for having us. Been great!

S: Busier than ever… not a lot of sleep. *laughs*

J: A lot of things on the horizon to be stoked about.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Vinyl”?

S: “Vinyl” is a different track for us. Really embraces the feel good vibes that our previous singles have delivered, but instead of writing narratively we chose the eye opening message route.

J: It’s a song that feels super relevant to modern dating culture. A lot of fun references we threw in there kind of hidden within the fun retro groove.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

J: Totally. Slavo & I were very much fed up with the whole dating app scene. Tinder & all that kind of stuff *laughs* .. so we wrote this song about meeting someone before all of it existed.

S: When it was really simple & more courageous to introduce yourself to someone. Sparking up a conversation face to face & not going through an hour thinking of how you’ll reply. I think It’s a relatable feeling a lot of people around our age have felt at one time or another.

How was the film experience?

S: Really awesome. Although Justin and I have been the conceptual brain behind our previous videos this one was the first we officially took the director’s chair in.

J: There was definitely a different vibe about this shoot. A lot more personal, not relying on any tricks or effects. Purely us acting out how the song made us feel when we wrote it. We were really grateful to find two amazing actresses that we had organic chemistry with.

How was the recording and writing process?

S: It’s always fun to reflect and talk about the process of a song and how it evolved into its final version. There was a guitar lick I voice memoed a while back and sent to Justin that originally inspired the verse melody and concept of the song. Ironically that guitar part didn’t make the cut, but instead our buddy Joey (TE Music Group) helped us come up with the newer guitar melody that you hear at the intro of the song.

J: Writing the song was quick and exciting because we were inspired by a topic that is very now and real to us. Recording always takes time, but was an equally memorable experience.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are covering someone else music than when you are working on your original music?

J: There are bits and pieces of a different mindset coming into a cover, yet it’s oddly similar to working on an original. We never want our covers to feel like an extension of the original, but instead a completely separate interpretation.

S: I think that’s what has led people to gravitate towards them. Taking on what has already been a hit, but now approaching it from a completely different angle. On top of that it really is fun for us to do. Changes up the flow between our original work.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

J: Our favorite question. *laughs*.

S: We can confirm there’s a definite EP on the way. Slated for late summer. Until then, we’re constantly writing and working on new sounds.

Would you be exploring other themes?

S: We’ve been working on records non stop for the release & I think there’s definitely a new sense of maturity with recent tracks.

J: From a conceptual place we’re diving a bit deeper than we have before. As people we’re experiencing more so that reflects in our writing.

Any plans to hit the road?

J: We’ve been gigging a lot in the college market. Really found a dedicated fanbase there from universities all over the states.

S: We also have upcoming main stage show at Playlist Live Orlando & more city shows to be announced soon!

What else is happening next in Fly By Midnight’s world?

J: A lot more adventures. We’re on a real inspiration kick lately & want to keep that up.

S: For sure. We’ve been getting in some really talented writing rooms in the city. Meeting a ton of awesome writers/producers who share the same visions that we have for the project.
