Pelorus is the creation of Leon Van Dijk, a 20 year old songwriter, producer, singer and ethereal and spectral R&B artist from New Zealand. His debut EP, ‘Perfect Storm’, recorded in first New Zealand and finished in Bristol, comes out this summer on Funnel Music. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Deptford Goth, James Blake, Bon Iver, and the peaceful, sun-drenched comfort of Australian singer Kyson, every instrument on the release, apart from some drums on lead single ‘Alive’, is played by Leon himself.

The name Pelorus comes from a river in New Zealand that Leon and his family would stop and swim in on their way to a family back in Kaiteriteri. “I chose the name because for me it fits with the music. My music is quite flowing and I tend to think of a lot of water imagery when creating the music”

Growing up in a musical family (both his parents are jazz musicians) meant there was always instruments around the house and this was where the foundations of the EP were laid down. In a makeshift studio at the house he wrote and recorded demos as well laying down most of the guitars, saxophone and percussion parts for the EP. The finishing touches were put to the EP once Leon moved to Bristol last summer.

The EP is preceded by the bittersweet single ‘Alive’, the lyrics for which were written soon after Leon made this move to Bristol. “For me the song has a bit of sombre tone I think because of the move I was just feeling a bit uncertain but it’s like an awakening uncertainty. Though for me the song mostly represents freedom and rebirth.”
