Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Yolo Yolo”?
YOLO YOLO was produced by Dj Coublon… Its an afro beat record with elements of latin and high life. I really wanted to create something different and organic. I speak about real life and the lyrics are intended to make the listener let go of the past and live for the now. The video which is now available on YouTube really expresses that.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song? How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote it because i’ve been through hanging onto the past and I know how it feels. It was written to inspire people. As soon as I heard the trumpets in the music I knew it was my next single. It was written in a day and recorded the next, it was fun and a great experiment.
What role does Africa plays in your music?
It’s where I’m from, so the music inspires all of my expression. Africa gives my rhythm and soul.
You are known for playing with different styles – would there be any particular genres you would blending together?
I just love music, everything goes together when the top line is right. I don’t categorise myself. I believe its all about how you project and connect with listeners.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Generally from my mood or experience, sometimes its about the beat too.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m currently on a promo tour across Africa, I’ve done Nigeria and South Africa. Kenya is next.
What else is happening next in Seyi Shay’s world?
I plan to release singles under Island Records and release a new single here in Africa at the end of April.
