INTERVIEW: Ninajirachi

We caught up with Sydney-based producer Ninajirachi, the moniker of 17-year-old Nina Wilson to talk about her debut single “Pure Luck ft. Freya Staer” which is out now via Seeking Blue Records and her plans for the near future.

Hi Nina, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey VENTS, thanks, I’ve been great!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pure Luck”?

It has been a very exciting release. I’ve never had my work available to buy and stream before and it’s still so crazy to me that people all over the world can hear it.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not at all, really. I wrote and produced the instrumental track around Freya’s vocals so I suppose it was inspired by recording with her. She wrote the lyrics and I don’t know what inspired her writing.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

A video would be really cool! There has been some discussion around it, but I really don’t know how I would like it to look at this stage.

How was the recording and writing process?

Really fun, the song came together really quickly. This all happened during last Christmas holidays, so I was able to work on it all day every day for about a week straight and I finished producing it within about two weeks of initially recording with Freya.

What was it like to work with Freya Staer and how did she come on board?

Freya is awesome, we’ve been friends since we were 10 years old, so I’ve followed her music (and vice versa) pretty much from the beginning. We saw each other in a shopping centre after having not seen each other in a while and we decided it would be cool to meet up and make some music together. Not long after, she came over and we recorded the first verse of Pure Luck. Working with a friend makes for really fun and comfortable collaboration.

What role does Sydney plays in your music?

I live on the Central Coast, around an hour north of Sydney. Not much goes on where I live, so I heavily rely on the internet and the odd underage Sydney gig for opportunities to meet people and hear/see new things. At the moment, I don’t think Sydney plays a huge role in my music, but hopefully spending more time there once school is out will broaden my horizons more than the Central Coast has been able to.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I’m in school holidays at the moment which provides some time for writing new stuff. There are a number of demos I wrote during the Christmas holidays which I’m looking forward to developing further, and there are a couple of other songs which are pretty much finished.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’ve worked with someone really cool on this next release and I’m very happy with how it has turned out. You can probably expect to hear it within the next month.

Any plans to hit the road?

Unfortunately not until I’ve finished my HSC. I’m a little confined to Sydney until October but there will be the odd local DJ gig over the next few months, which will be really fun.

What else is happening next in Ninajirachi’s world?

Not a lot, just trying to live up my free time while I can and get ahead on my school major works before the year 12 madness returns in a couple of weeks!
