INTERVIEW: P-Funk Drenched Hip Hop JAMS

Hi Flava, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Amazing! Summer time chi is around the corner, I know we got the hottest mixtape of the summer in our arsenal. I’m good, just taking the days 1  by 1.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “All I Know”?

No doubt… All I Know is our first single off the upcoming mixtape “Flava Child Experience”. Its got high energy, fast tempos, it fuses funk with hip hop and electronic music. It showcases what our high energy songs will sound like. Me n Nedim working everyday to push the boundaries of this music shit. Anything less is uninspiring for me.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Not really. This song was inspired by passion. Passion and love the 2 greatest human emotions…

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yupppppp. I’m pretty proud of the video we shot for this. I directed it and Pat Banahan from LostTV did the editing for the video, so its definitely got some next level animation edits. I actually shot some of the video at the restaurant i used to wash dishes at not too long ago. That was a wild experience – I used to dread going in there every day with every ounce of energy in me. So to be in there voluntarily, doing what i love, i had to smirk to myself when that was going on…

The single comes off your new album The Flava Child Experience – what’s the story behind the title?

Its a funk drenched, psychedelic, symphonic, thorough, high quality piece of work. Anytime you hear me, you’ll know its the Flava Child – i got that 1/1 sound. But the Experience element brings you the storytelling, the growing pains, the self reflections. I buried my best friend 3 months ago, Ive fallen in and out of love, I’ve fired managers that i thought were lifelong partners, I quit my job waiting tables and washing dishes, I lose friends everyday. This mix tape is the audio diary of those experiences. Like BIG said, I got a story to tell…

How was the recording and writing process?

Smooth. Me and Nedim live together. We’ve been working together for free for like damn near 4/5 years. We’ve been through so much together its wild how far we’ve came. I executive produce the project. I’ll decide where i wanna take the project, ill dig for some records, find sounds and tempos to use as our foundation to create. Then from there, he warms up, started making some ill beats with this direction in mind. I’ll record to them by myself, i don’t write too much anymore, just a stream of consciousness whilst i record. After i get the vocals down, we usually bring in some live instruments. Nedim’s mixing process is super intricate he likes to take his time. His attention to detail is one of my favorite qualities about dude…

What role does Chicago plays on your music?

Chicago is home. Home is where the heart is. Chicago is where I’m inspired. I used to walk to work in negative degree weather here.  I go to parties and jump in cyphers 20 deep since i was 14/15 years old – Chicago taught me how to carry myself. I used to get ate alive in those sessions, but that Chicago competitiveness was instilled in me. I worked on my craft like a hooper shooting 100 shots a day. Sooner than later you couldn’t see me in a cypher. I was that white kid who would step in and shut shit down…

What made you want to blend funk with hip hop?

I’m the Flava Child. Ima funky ass mf.

Are you planning to play with other styles?

Music has no boundaries. My sound has no limitations. I plan to travel the world and integrate sounds in my music from all over the world.

What other struggles did you get to explore on this album?

This mix tape is 100% self made, self paid. The music part is easy, we risk our live$$ to do what we love. “I’m ready to risk it all…”

Any plans to hit the road?

No doubt… I love performing, I love to connect with the all the beautiful people, but we’ll see what i decide to do with the shows. I want to perform this mix tape with a 4 – 6 piece band and well see what it takes to make that happen.

What else is happening next in JAMS The Flava Child’s world?

That All I Know video coming REAL soon. Then we’re hitting them up the head with some real heavy funk. More high quality music breaking boundaries. More videos. Then we’re gonna give the world what it needs and drop that “Flava Child Experience” when the time is ready. I appreciate you guys at VENTS rocking with me, I can’t wait to look back on this journey 🙂 LOVE!
