INTERVIEW: Mike Liegel

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

No, not really. I just imagined a story of someone madly in love with a girl, but no matter what he did or how much he loved her there was nothing he could do to make her stick around because she was afraid of settling down and was always searching for something better.

Plans for a video release?

We just wrapped up the final edits on the “Stick Around” music video and plan on releasing it soon.

Why did you name the album Stick Around?

I decided to name my EP Stick Around because the first song I ever created from start to finish was “Stick Around” and felt a connection to it.

How was the recording/ writing process?

I started writing the songs for Stick Around back in early 2014 by putting together different melody ideas on my piano and recording associated lyrics. At the end of 2014, I met my manager, Joe Hiddemen, and gave him a demo CD of my song ideas. Then in early 2015, he was able to connect me with songwriter and producer, Andrew Seltzer, to work on a six-track EP. We started working on the songs in his Brooklyn studio and finished the titular song “Stick Around” within a month. We wrote and recorded the remaining five songs by the end of 2016.

What role does NJ play in your music?

New Jersey plays a huge role in my music. I came up with most of the ideas for the songs on the Stick Around in my home recording studio that I worked on side by side with my father to build in the backyard of my childhood home in New Jersey. My studio, reminiscent of an old barn, became a place of creative solitude to explore new ideas. I also have a strong following and support from family and friends in northern NJ that keep me motivated to follow my passion of songwriting.

How did your upbringing influence you as an artist?

My parents encouraged me to learn the piano at a young age and pushed me to stick with it. My family has been supportive my whole life to pursue my dreams and they’ve been my number one fans in helping me to get to this point of releasing my first EP.

What emotions did you get to explore throughout this material?

I got to explore the emotional highs and lows within a relationship from that amazing moment when you meet someone for the first time like in my tracks “Left With Gold” and “Lovely” to the heartbreaking moment when you know it’s inevitable that the relationship is going to end, like in “Stick Around” and “Forevermore,” then back up to that euphoric moment when you know you’re going to spend the rest of your life with someone, like in “Hold On” and “Be There”.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, I have an album release show setup at The Bowery Electric in NYC on May 12th. Then I plan on hitting a few cities on the east coast and LA throughout the Summer/Fall.

What is happening next in your world?

A lot of exciting things, I will be releasing my second single “Be There” on April 14th and third single “Lovely” on April 28th followed by my Stick Around release on May 12th. In addition to my EP release, I’m starting to work on a music video for “Be There”.
