INTERVIEW: The Black Bullets

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

“We’re doing great thanks! Keeping busy, playing shows, travelling around… we love this life”

Can you  talk to us more about your latest single “Mockingbird”?

“Mockingbird is our first release in approximately a year, which is ages for us. We’ve been gigging constantly, so it was awesome to take a quick break from touring to go back into the studio and lay down some new stuff. Musically speaking, we wanted the track to have a kind of swagger to it, something bold and confident ya know?  We ended up simplifying the music a lot, and really tried to just “play for the song” giving the track some room to breathe.”

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

“We were approached some time last year to write some songs for a movie soundtrack, and Mockingbird was one of the first batch of songs we wrote for that project. Was pretty cool to look at songwriting from that perspective, and we came up with all sorts of stuff. It was a really creative period of time for the band, as we also had a lot to deal with in our personal lives. As always, our music is a reflection of our lifestyle, so what you are hearing is a snapshot of what life is like for us…. I can’t say too much about the movie, but we ended up keeping the songs for ourselves, so now we can release them as and when suits us”

Can you tell us more about the upcoming video?

“The video was shot by Jay Hillier. We’ve got the visuals of us all playing poker with tarot cards, gambling with fate.. we brought in loads of guns and booze to play with, which was awesome!  Also starring in the video are Bex Fisher and Betsie Bardot, providing us with the visuals for the “mockingbirds”.. was a lot of fun making this one…”

How was the recording and writing  process?

“The writing took place over a year, between shows etc.. Once they were ready to go, the recording process was relatively quick and painless, as we had already been playing the track for ages anyway.  We always try and lay the music down as quickly as possible – no one wants to have the groundhog day take haha!”

What role does the UK plays in your  music?

“The UK is our home, and we are always happy playing here. We mad a lot of friends (and enemies) here so it keeps it interesting.. We just got back from a 2 week tour of rural Spain, and it was cool to see how differently the audience reacted to us. Definitely want to go back there.”

Does the new single mean we can  expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

“No plans for an album from us.. The idea of an album feels a little odd to us right now.  We will be releasing a lot of material soon, but I can’t see it being an album…. You can make your own playlist, cant you?”

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

“No album as yet… but watch this space!”

Would you call this new material a follow up or total departure from your previous EP?

“From day one, we have preserved the rock n roll heart, the spirit and the passion for this lifestyle, but the music has evolved over time.  I think Mockingbird is probably our slowest track so far.  We try for some continuity for all our music, but at the same time, don’t want to be making the same record over and over again..”

Any  plans to hit the road?

“We’re always on the road haha!!”

What else is happening next in The Black Bullets’ world?

“Well have a ton of dates already booked for this year, with more coming in all the time, so plenty of live shows.  We also will be recording yet more material and releasing it when its cooked!”
