Rita Indiana was born in Santo Domingo, DR in 1977. She studied art history and fine arts, both careers she abandoned to focus on literature. She has published several novels including La Estrategia de Chochueca, PAPI, Nombres y Animales, and La Mucama de Omicunlé.
Her 2010 electro-merengue album El Juidero drew critical acclaim and support from the likes of Pitchfork, The FADER, Vice, and NPR. In 2011, Latin newspaper EL PAIS named her one of the ‘100 Most Influential Hispanics.’ Her musical and literary works explore and deconstruct ideas about the modern Caribbean identity, gender, class and race, through an aesthetic mix of 20th Century popular music and magical, religious rhythms from all Black Americas. Rita Indiana will play her first show in nearly 7 years at Isle of Light Festival this Saturday, April 1st in Santo Domingo, DR — a monumental hometown live return for the renowned artist.
