Today, via the premiere of “I Feel Unloved” on Noisey.com, we get our first glimpse into Babyman, the MGMT (Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden) produced debut full-length from Simon Doom. “I Feel Unloved” shows the ability of Simon O’Connor (the man behind the Simon Doom Project) to incorporate a lifetime worth of musical experience into a brand of power pop that is at once innovative and accessible. You can stream “I Feel Unloved” now on Spotify and Soundcloud.
Whether it be his role in more prominent bands like Kuroma and Amazing Baby or taking a comical approach to the lyrics, there was always something O’Connor could point to indicating Simon Doom was ‘just a hobby project’ in the past. Then in late 2015, O’Connor had his doomsday clock officially punched when his wife gave birth to their son. Feeling as though it may be his last chance to go all-in on the project, O’Connor fought through what was a year-long creative drought to come up with 10 songs in just over a month. The resulting album, Babyman, explores sources that O’Connor hadn’t been able to fully tap into on his previous two EPs while simultaneously cherry-picking the best aspects of both of those releases. The result is a record that tackles a lot of concepts both sonically and lyrically without straying too far away from what O’Connor’s ambitions were with the album.
Babyman is due out this May on Votiv. In the meantime, you can catch Simon Doom live on April 2nd at Union Pool in Brooklyn and May 24th with Piebald at the Ballroom at The Outerspace in Hamden, Connecticut. Stay tuned for more updated on Babyman and additional tour dates from Simon Doom!
