-Great! Just got back from a festival called SXSW which was a blast. Thanks for taking the time to interview us!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “XO”?
-XO is the first song we released as a band. We wrote and recorded it in a tiny apartment in Los Angeles. It’s always a daunting task to pick a debut single, but we felt like this was a good place to start.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
-It’s about an unhealthy relationship. Very autobiographical. I was in something half-hearted, which lead to a damaged situation.
How was the film experience?
-Shooting the video was wild experience for us. There are so many moving parts that have to work Together in order to make a video: lighting, wardrobe, director, DP, and tons of other crew members. It’s chaotic but really rewarding to see each expert in their field come together to make something that we’re proud of. As soon as we started discussions about doing a music video I knew I wanted to work with Tobias Nathan. He has such a unique ability to capture color and use it to depict a story.
The single comes off your new album Honest – what’s the story behind the title?
-Honest is the name of one of the songs on the EP, but it also feels like a thread throughout all the songs. They’re vulnerable, open, and real stories.
How was the recording and writing process?
-We wrote a lot in Nashville and los angeles, but also we’re constantly writing. All the recordings were done in a bedroom in la. Joey and I worked with our good friend keith varon who really understood the vision we had in our heads and helped us bring it to life. It wasn’t a very glamorous process, but we honestly had a ton of fun making these records, and in a lot of ways I think the limitations we had are what give the songs sure personality and feeling.
What role did Nashville play on the writing of this album?
-Nashville is our home base. We love it here and it’s always a great place to come back to. I tell people that there is something magical about it. We grew up in the Philly/Jersey area and didn’t know many (if any) people who did music full time, but in Nashville it’s very common. It’s just an inspiring place to be.
With what things did you guys come clean on this record? Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
– I’m trying to be real and honest about everything in our songs. It’s kind of like therapy in a messed up way. I came clean about my own issues in opening up to people. Especifically in past relationships and how that has in turn affected those relationships.
How are you preparing for your upcoming tour?
-Practicing a lot, and designing a new light show.
What are you looking forward the most?
-Singing with fans of our music. There is nothing like it.
Would you be solely promoting the new material or can fans expect few surprises?
-Surprises for sure. We only have 4 songs released so we’ll be testing out some new songs live.
What else is happening next in Nightly’s world?
-Lots of things, each very exciting. Working on new songs, as well as new material for current songs like videos and other cool content. lots of shows. We’re really excited to be where we are and meet people who listen to our music on this next tour!
