INTERVIEW: Tara Williamson

Hi Tara, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been busy! It’s exciting to be putting this new album out and there’s a lot to do!

Can you talk to us more about your upcoming single “Messenger”?

“Messenger” is really one of my favorite songs from the album – I know that’s weird to say, because I love all of them, but this one really turned into this unexpected, spaghetti-western movie soundtrack in the studio and I can’t get enough of it. It really came to life with my producer’s vision and such talented players. A play on the “Don’t shoot the messenger” adage, this messenger has an ulterior motive and we can see right through him.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I do have a live performance video of this song that will come out with the premiere and I would love to do a full on music video of this, most likely in the summer.

The song comes off your upcoming EP Evolution One - what’s the story behind the title?

Well, really it’s my first real effort and, in the process, my own development as a person and artist has been like a series of evolutions. With each evolution, I become clearer about who I am and what I have to give. It’ll be released in four phases: Evolution One, Two, Three, and then Evolutions – the entire full length album.

How was the recording and writing process?

The time in the studio for this album was really dreamlike. I had an amazing team and picked the perfect place in Church House. We put a lot of planning into making sure everything ran smoothly from beginning to end and I’ve really never had a better time recording. Writing, for me, has been hit or miss over the years but it seemed like the last year and a half or so were crucial in getting a process down without judgment of what came out and, to my surprise, some really good stuff came out. I was part of a writing group that had us pumping out songs weekly and a lot of my material must have been just waiting for the right time to surface.

What role does Austin play in your music?

Austin has really made me comfortable to try making my own music again and I’m thankful for the opportunity to live and work and write here. The creative culture here is inviting and encourages me to be myself. It’s safe here to create. I guess Austin’s role has been to provide a space for me to explore and create while being influenced by some of the best players who either live here or who are always passing through. It’s the perfect place to do what I do.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Most of these songs were born out of personal experience and processing things that had been buried for a while. I was part of a songwriting group which would give a prompt for a weekly song assignment (often just a word or two) and whatever I was dealing with would wrap itself around that prompt and make it work for what needed to be said or felt.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! I’m planning a house concert tour of the West Coast during the late summer!

What else is happening next in Tara Williamson’s world?

I’m really looking forward to taking a summer trip with my mom this year after the album is off and running! Gotta keep those priorities straight!

  1. I’ve known Tara for a few years now and she is an extremely talented young lady. She can belt it out like Janis Joplin or be a soulful as Roberta Flack. Can’t wait for the new CD and wish her nothing but the best.
