Matt: Hey, thanks for having me. It’s been a weird year but doing good.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fast Track Addict”?
Matt: “Fast Track” is a song I wrote in August when I was still living in Los Angeles, and was on the fence of whether or not I wanted to keep trying the music thing, the song really helped me get my mind straight and gave me a direction for this new record, which is why we chose it as the first single. Lyrically it’s pretty straight forward and honest with what it’s about. Sometimes you find yourself in situations that you never expected to be in, or wanted to be in to begin with, but with the way life goes and decisions you make, you find yourself there anyway.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Matt: I would be lying if I said it wasn’t inspired by the way things transpired with my last band, but all in all it’s just about the last seven months of my life, and getting back to who I really am as a person. Getting my head on straight kind of thing.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Matt: we’ve talked about shooting a video for this song and actually have a concept ready to go, so we’re definitely thinking about it and want to. We want to have a video for every song on the album so at some point I’m sure we’ll get around to making the video.
How was the recording and writing process?
Matt: We recorded this song with Andrew D’Angelo who works a lot with The Wrecks, and that was one of the smoothest sessions I’ve ever been apart of, it was a lot of fun. The writing process was interesting. I was really stoned sitting in a park by my old apartment, and the lyrics just came to me. I wrote them down then got in contact with Jon Benward, who now plays guitar for us, and he came over. Then about two hours later we had a rough acoustic cut of the song. It’s been a lot of fun experimenting with everything and finding the new sound.
Would you call this a departure from your past project or a follow up?
Matt: it’s definitely been a trip knowing this record is an Out With the Old record. I think we decided in January that we wanted this to be an OWTO album and to bring back this project, but all our early material is very different than what we’re doing now. With that being said, it feels more like an OWTO album than “Miscellaneous Things” did to be honest. It feels like the album we were trying to write when we broke up a few years back, just more honest and natural. It feels like the songs were just waiting for the right time to come to us.
How’s your new album coming along?
Matt: we have the album ready for production. Right now we’re locking in the studio that we’ll be cutting it at so hopefully we’re able to get the ball rolling soon.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Matt: We’re hoping for the end of summer or end of the year at the latest. The record was originally named RISIN, but we decided to change it but are keeping the new title a secret for now.
Any plans to hit the road?
Matt: Definitely, we’re hoping to be out playing shows again this summer across the US so everyone can come jam the old stuff and hear what’s to come.
What else is happening next in Out With The Old’s world?
Matt: we’re back on the grind. We’ve got a lot of new material coming out this year, and will definitely be hitting the road before the end of the year so just a lot music, and hopefully even more tours. We’re stoked to be back and can’t wait to see everyone soon.
