A contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, Irma Thomas is known as known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” and worked with Allen Toussaint, Randy Newman and more before winning her first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2007. “I love the fact that women can show love to other women without guilt. We have been doing it from the beginning of time,” she said of her compelling reinterpretation. “My mother was a she and she gave me unconditional love all of my life. So why not express it in song?”
