INTERVIEW: Georgia June

Hi Georgia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great, I’ve been busy with music stuff and I start recording soon, so I’m super duper excited to do that!! How are you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bunch of Oxymorons”?

I wrote the track a while ago, it’s about the world and society being equally as screwed as it is amazing. It’s an older song of mine, which I just really wanted to put out there!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I think it was more a string of events. At the time, Australia had a really shitty prime minister (not much has changed unfortunately!) who was making some pretty disgusting foreign policy decisions, and I had just come home from a party where everyone was absolutely munted for no reason other than to fit in, and I have no idea why but I just remember thinking about babies in the car ride home and how they are just these amazing little miracles. So this song is supposed to represent the paradox of the world and how although we have all this constant negative nonsense we also have a lot of beauty everywhere. That was very deep and I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be at the time, it just kinda ended up like that.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

No, not for Bunch of Oxymorons! But I am definitely releasing some videos for upcoming singles this year, which I’m extremely excited about!!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process for me in general tends to be really quick. I’m pretty sure I had finished the song in 30 minutes, it had a really clear direction from the start and I usually leave it a week then go back and tweak things that could be stronger with a fresh set of ears. The recording process was extremely simple, just me and my guitar! It was recorded at Def Wolf Studios in Sydney.

What role does Australia play on your music?

A massive one!! Australian music is so exciting right now! I’m so excited for so many Australian acts because I think now with technology we are more reachable? If that makes sense? I think with online mediums, people from all over the world can listen to Australian music now, which is awesome, whereas before, we were kinda this big island with lots of spiders and no one really knew what was going on with music there! And Australian music I think has its own unique personality of honesty and colloquialism which has impacted me a lot!

How has NYC influence you as an artist?

I think as an artist NYC has impacted me with making me realise how badly I want to be a successful musician and to push myself and be super persistent. But, I also think as much as I am an artist, NYC has impacted me as a person in an innumerable amount of ways. It’s just sky-rocketed my independence and social awareness. It’s also just opened my eyes to this amazing, passionate young community which hubs here and it’s super inspiring and makes me want to be the best version of myself all the time, which I think is pretty cool.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes!! I’m going to be releasing a series of singles and I’m recording them right now, so I’ll be giving out more and more information, but music is on its way!!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Early June I’d say! I’m going to say June 1st, because that is the goal, but definitely around then!!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes!! Depending on my bank account and how everything with the upcoming singles go, I definitely would LOVE to gig around!!

What else is happening next in Georgia June’s world?

Very very cool things. gigs, releasing music, music videos, vegan grilled cheese sandwhiches! But I’m most excited to release this next single, I think it really encaptures me musically and it is super fun, so I hope people like it!!
