Hi Emalia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! Thanks so much for having me. I have been very well, thanks. Super busy, but loving it!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single and video “On Your Own”?

Of course! ‘On Your Own’ is definitely one of my most favourite songs that I have written. I am heavily inspired and influenced by 90’s and 2000’s RnB music, the stuff I grew up with, and feel that this track definitely had those elements present with my own modern spin, which was super exciting for me. It has taken me a while to find my sound and my niche throughout the years as a developing artist, and I feel like this song was definitely a pivotal moment for me in discovering that. The video had the same sort of effect on me too – I had this vision in my mind of what I wanted it to look like before we had even finished writing the song – and the result we got totally blew my mind. I feel like it is a great visual representation of my artistry at this point in my career.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, definitely. My music is inspired by true events and emotions, whether it be events that happened in my life or in the lives of those around me. This particular song was inspired by a close friend’s situation with her ex. This song was basically birthed out of what I had seen her experience, as well as some of my own experiences with past friendships that I felt gave me a similar sense of hurt and betrayal. I wanted to create something emotional, vulnerable, raw and authentic – but something that also had a particular message within it. A message I wanted my friend to know, and any one else out there who has been through something similar – You are strong, you are worthy, and you don’t have to settle for that toxic BS.

How was the film experience?

Oh my gosh, it was so much fun! It was a lot of work, over an intense two days, but so much fun. I had an amazing team of people working with me, who I am so grateful for. It wouldn’t have been the same without their involvement.

How was the recording and writing process?

Always a great time. This song came together pretty quickly. I was working with a dear friend of mine, Adam Reily, and we usually spend the first day of our writing sessions just chatting, catching up, getting into the deep and meaningful stuff that’s going on in our lives. Then the second day, or even later on that first night depending on how we are feeling, we have all that chatter fresh in our minds, and we are usually pretty inspired so the words and melodies just flow out.

What was it like to work with Adam Reily and how did that relationship develop?

I actually met Adam through an unlikely series of events – It’s a long story. I personally think it was fate. The universe working it’s magic, if you will.

Working with Adam is not only such a fantastic learning experience, we always have a ball. We get along like a house on fire, and work super well together. Our writing styles and the way our minds work are quite similar, so I am always stoked with what we create. He is a great mentor to me, as well as a great friend, and I am very lucky to have him working with me on this EP. He has had so much experience in the industry, and is such an incredible talent, which is invaluable. Plus, whenever we write together, he always introduces me to the BEST restaurants and food. Good music, good company, and good food means I am a happy girl.

How much did he influence the song?

It’s really hard to say, because we both bounce off one another. One idea from my head leads to another idea from his, and vice versa. We will spend some time writing in silence and then he’ll pipe up with something brilliant, I’ll share what I had come up with, and we sort of mesh together our ideas. We both had so much fun writing this one, and came up with a whole bunch of ideas really quickly. We were definitely on the same wavelength during the session.

How’s your new EP coming along?

I am so excited to share it with the world! Creating the EP has been a long process, but I have loved every step of the way. I can’t put into words how it feels to see it all coming together –  it’s something I have dreamed about and worked towards since I was 5 years old.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

At this stage, I can tell you it will be released sometime in July this year. In regards to the title… you will just have to wait and see ????

Would all the songs dive into different aspects of cheating and bad relations or would you be exploring other themes?

There are a variety of themes that are explored within the EP. A lot of the music is centered around different types of relationships, and the multitude of things that can happen within them. I have been super inspired by my past experiences with bullying, mental illness, ex-friends, current friends, and my partner. I always try to include moral messages or life lessons within my songs. I guess the overall theme throughout all of the songs is ’empowerment’. I explore how empowerment can be found and achieved through an array of different circumstances – in a pursuit to inspire others to value themselves and believe in themselves. I think we live in a society where people are afraid of those that are confident in who they are; who can speak their mind – like it is something to be ashamed of; as if people who believe in themselves, and are true to their soul, are diseased. I’d like to change that way of thinking.

Any plans to hit the road?

For sure! I am thinking about going on an Australian tour later this year to promote the EP, and maybe even share some unreleased material! I would love to tour around the US sometime in the near future too. We will see where the road takes me!

What else is happening next in Emalia’s world?

Next is another single release, coming very soon. After that comes the EP, and from there, I’ll be finishing off the full length album. But that’s just the beginning of the journey!
