Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey VENTS, we’re very well thank you!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hiding Place”?
Hiding Place is the first track we’ve released since ‘Beneath the Spinning Lights’, our debut Ep in the summer of 2016. It’s the most raw/angry we’ve been as a band, we had some demons to work out with this one.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Our career so far really, as short as that is. We had a rollercoaster of a first year which ended with us replacing two members. It was a very difficult time for us as a band, but we weren’t ready to call it yet. Hiding Place was almost like the therapy we needed to get through that and come out the other side.
How was the recording and writing process?
This was one of those tracks that just falls into the right place, it’s one of the quickest we’ve written to date. It came from an honest place and just felt right throughout. The recording was slightly different for us because it was the first time we’d worked with our new drummer Andy, who was just filling in at the time. He was kinda thrown in at the deep end because he’d only been with us for about 4 days when we laid the track down.
What was it like to work with Romesh Dodangoda and how did that relationship develop?
Romesh produced our debut EP in 2016, so we’ve got a pretty tight relationship with him. It was great to come back for round two because we’ve got that bond now, so it was a really fun process. He’s one of those guys that just knows music, he feels it, so it’s a really nice organic process for us.
How much did he influence the album?
His influence is pretty strong, he’s got an incredible back catalogue and his experience is just mind blowing. But he’s not overpowering, a lot of the time the influence is just encouraging us to open up and do what’s honest, and giving us the confidence to do that. He’s a great person to work with, you can hear his heart on the record as much as you can ours.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
There’ll be a lot of new material coming over the next year! We’ve almost finished the EP, and we’ve got a lot of extra things going on too. We’re frustratingly prolific, and sticking to just a small number of tracks is tough, so you can expect to see a few surprises through the year.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
There are a few titles we’re bouncing around, often these things can change the day before a release though, once it’s right we’ll know. It’d be far too early to give that up! As a hint though, fans may have heard the lyric already.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’re out on a UK tour at the end of March, and we’ve got plans for a lot more coming up through the year.
What else is happening next in Witterquick’s world?
We’re just working at being us! We’ve done a release now, and been through hell on top of that, so we feel stronger and a bit more confident. Fans have had a good introduction to us as a band, but it’s just an introduction.
