INTERVIEW: Vox Eagle

Answered by Andrew Crosby

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

-Hey VENTS thanks for having us! We’ve been great, just mixing the last few songs on our debut EP.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “No Sleep”?

-Yeh, its our first release as Vox Eagle but It was the last song we recored on the EP really and was never really meant to happen. We had finished tracking the EP and then were in NYC in the studio with Zach Seman just messing around with some new sounds for fun, then No Sleep just kinda appeared out of nowhere. The Synth swells rang out over the speakers and then Luke had this cool muted guitar things he kept playing over and over and then we kind of all just got sucked in and worked on it for about 48 hours with very little sleep. So we were just kinda going at it until it was done.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

-I think most times Luke and I hang out in the studio there seems to be a general lack of sleep. The song manifested in itself from these experiences of late studio nights and then heading out after and the song just grew from there into this 48 hour writing frenzy.

It started out with Luke experimenting with producer Zach on some new Synths and Guitar sounds and then lyrics kinda grew out of the song as we were awake for so long writing it. Its a general pattern when Luke and I write or get in the studio that we sometimes are up for days writing as we may not see each other again for a few weeks a we live in different parts of the country. So I suppose we are often not sleeping when we write, sometimes its like steering a ship, you kinda write and work til you pass out and then the other guy takes over.

How was the film experience?

-The video was mostly an excuse for Andy and I to hang in Vegas, which is always a fun time, and Blake Kuhre, who shot and directed the film clip and is super talented and an A+ guy, also a good sport for putting up with us and babysitting. We had to get the whole thing done in 24hr and had pretty much no budget so it was a pretty fast and furious the process. Blake had to try and get all the shots wrapped before Luke and I got too lost in the Vegas night life… He did a stellar job.

The single comes off your new EP  – what’s the story behind the title?

-The EP is self titled or yet to be titled. But I like to think the title “No Sleep” it has something to do with Andy and my recording process but he’ll have to answer that one.

How was the recording and writing process?

-Since we lived on opposite sides of the countries when recording the EP we would fly to random locations and set up our mobile studio in various Air Bnbs and hotel rooms around the country and then record for 3 or four days straight without break. We did this a bunch of times in Colorado, Vegas, LA, Woodstock. It was nice to travel around the country to record and I think it has a real influence on the sound. Certain songs certainly take me back to places we tracked those tunes.

How did the different locations where you recorded influence the music on the album?

-Each location has a different feeling to it, and I think just being in different environments inspires different ideas — from the sounds you choose for a song, to the melodies and textures and even the beats.

What made you want to travel around the states?

-The best way to experience America is on the road.

What aspect of your journey did you get to explore on this record? Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

– Usually when we start making the music to the songs we already have a phrase in mind that will make it into the song’s lyric. In that way, the groove of the song and the lyric are fused together from the start. We like reading a lot of poetry and playing with words so we try and have some fun with the lyrics as well.

A lot of the lyrics based on personal experiences and then finding ways to voice those experiences in songs whilst adding another layer of color and excitement to the music.

Any plans to hit the road?

-For sure, we’re excited to play some shows this year in support of the EP once its released so stay tuned..

What else is happening next in Vox Eagle’s world?

– A whole batch of new music is about to come out, some shows later in the year and some more videos as well.
