INTERVIEW: Maplerun

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello there & greetings from Greece! We are doing well. Its a very busy period for us, as we are about to release our new album PARTYKRASHER while getting ready to hit the road in a few months time.

Can you talk to us more about your single “Keep On Staring”? Any plans to release a video for the single?

“Keep On Staring” is our brand new Official Music Video, out this April. We do not consider it a single but rather one of the most direct songs of the album – as our radio single for PARTYKRASHER is the song “When You’re Down”. In our minds “Keep On Staring” is the middle finger to anyone who tries to hold you down in your life by constantly telling you what you can and what you cannot do. It combines a comic storyline made by the super talented Lefteris Mavrogiannis and the band playing the song in the story’s environment, all combined by the amazing Mansterdesign – the one also responsible for our albums artwork.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Nothing in particular, just everyday life. Bullying, domestic violence, abusive parents, organised religion and abandonment are some of the heartwarming topics involved.

The single comes off your new album Partykrasher – what’s the story behind the title?

This is not a concept album as some songs are personal and reflect our views regarding abandonment, heartbreak, mental illness, anger and frustration. (GIVE IT TO YOU, REPLACE ME, KRASH, ARROW, REMEDY). The rest of the songs (DIY, KEEP ON STARING, WHEN YOU’RE DOWN, PARTYBOMB, WASTED) are tied under the following concept:

“Partymusic with antiparty meaning. The world is falling apart. Wake the fuck up” We are currently living in a world that is devastated by the economic, social, political, emigrational and environmental crisis. While the social ranks are getting more distant day by day, the politicians are still feeding us lies, the world is starving, education is limited and within all this chaos we rely on technology for entertainment, connection, communication etc. Is this how we want to live? Is anyone actually happy or are we all just letting life slip through our fingers while insisting on fake values and ideals? Close your eyes and trust your senses. Wake the fuck up. This is something that no one else can do for you.”

How was the recording and writing process?

We had many different ideas about the direction of this album. While we were in the process of putting them together and had some solid song structures, we recorded a live demo and started contacting producers in order to find out if anyone would be interested in our material. Then we got a reply from legendary producer and 3 time Grammy award winner David Bottrill who said that he was interested and wanted to come over to Greece and record us! We started working on the songs through Skype for about 3 months and then David came over to record. We spent a week finalising the songs and within the next 2 weeks we recorded the album. The recording process went amazingly well even though we were on a very tight schedule.

What was it like to work with David Bottrill and how did that relationship develop?

We were all big fans of David and were really excited to be working with him. We were unaware of the fact that he is a musical genius and that he would push us to our limits! Working with David has been one of the best experiences we have ever had, when it comes to songwriting and recording music. A great producer, always listening to the musicians opinion and trying to do his best in order to get the best result possible. Also, a great guy to hang out with! We became friends through this process and we cannot wait to hang out again.

How much did he influence the album?

The basic song structures were nearly there, but the album wouldn’t be the same if David wasn’t involved. He had great ideas about everything – how to connect different musical parts, which tempos work best, how to find the sound that we had in mind. All his ideas were great and they are all recorded in the album!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! We will be playing some shows here in Greece within April & May – including a couple of TV appearances and our release show here in Athens at the 12th of May – and then we will be joining Blaze Bayley (ex – Iron Maiden) for the Greek part of his 2017 Tour in June. Also we will be attending Alternative Metal Fest in Frankfurt this August and are currently waiting confirmation from other festivals.

What else is happening next in Maplerun’s world?

As soon as our new album is out, we will play as many shows possible in order to promote our material. We have already started putting some ideas together for our next album and within this summer we will start working properly towards our next musical steps. Life is looking good. Thank you for having us.
