I’m pretty great, actually. Busy with the upcoming record and arrangements for the summer and fall. It’s all good.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Animate”?
Well, it’s a quite personal reflection revolving around the fear of me ending up alone on my deathbed. I’m quite scared that, with everything going surprisingly well in terms of my career, that I’m going to end up with a lot to show for, but no one to share it with. It’s a fear that’s come to me over the last year or so. But I’m guessing that it’s a pretty common thing in this industry, though.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
It doesn’t happen a lot, but I can tell when I meet old- or peripheral friends that their interest in my wellbeing and in what I’m doing has taken a turn to insincerity. When that started to happen I started overthinking it, as I often do with everything, and started contemplating an ending where I’ve alienated everyone who loves and cares for me.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Very much so. It’ll be out the 10th of March! It’s a melancholic little thing.
The single comes off your new album The Strange Life– what’s the story behind the title?
In contrast to my first release ‘2064’, I wanted to write something closer to my own reality on this one. I actually came up with the title before the songs, so I had a theme to refer to when writing the lyrics and soundscapes. It’s become a piece that’s very dear to me and is a good mix of stories from my life up until this point, and predictions for my future. The title is a reflection of my inability to cope with life, merely because it makes no fucking sense to me.
How was the recording and writing process?
It’s been really great. I started writing the songs for the album while we were recording the last one. When I had finished it I took it to my friends and sparring partners, Mathias and Jakob, and we just indulged in making it as good as possible. It’s turned out to be my best work yet and I can’t wait to share it.
What role does Denmark plays on this album?
A lot, I guess. My whole life has been in Denmark, so every story and observation is from there. But every song on the album is about love, women and everything that entails, and that’s the same everywhere in the world.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Just snippets of my love life and women I’ve known and adored. In that sense, it’s now an overly complicated record. But as you know, love in its’ regularity is complicated enough on its’ own. I thought that I would just throw myself into that web and see what came of it. I’ve learned a great deal about myself in the process. Good and bad.
Any plans to hit the road?
Definitely! But as of now, everything is TBA. Hopefully I can reveal something very soon.
What else is happening next in The Chairman’s world?
Besides from finishing up the record, I’m releasing the second single from it on the 28th of April. Playing summer festivals and getting ready to release my record in September 2017. Hopefully i will be touring Europe in fall.
