INTERVIEW: Galaxy Express

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been good. We’re playing at SXSW in Austin, Texas this week and have been busy getting ready for that. We love SXSW and played at the festival in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and did American tours each year while we were there too. This will be our first time playing in the States in four years, so we’re really looking forward to it. We hope lots of people will come have fun and get wild with us during our SXSW showcases on March 17 and 18.

Can you tell us about the brand new single you’re releasing this month?

The track is called “The Way” and it came out on March 11. It’s an instrumental track and has a psychedelic feel to it. It’s the first new music we’ve released since our 2015 Walking on Empty album. We hope people like what they hear on “The Way.” We’re going to be releasing other singles this year too and hope to release our fifth full-length album in 2018.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song came from jamming together in the studio. It wasn’t planned at all, it just sort of happened naturally. When we heard what we had come up with we were happy. It kind of felt like finding pearls buried in mud! The original version of the track was about 10 minutes long. But we’ve edited it down and “The Way” now runs for about five-and-a-half minutes.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! The video will probably come out in late March. We wanted to have it ready for when the single was first released but ran out of time.

When was “The Way” recorded?

We recorded, mixed, and mastered the song all in one day. That happened on March 8 and the track was released on March 11. So it’s a really, really new song!

I’ve heard that you’ll be releasing one new single each month until the end of 2017. Will these songs be connected in any way?

Our goal is to release a song each month. But sometimes the songs may not get finished in time. Life is unknown, so we’ll see what happens. But we’re excited to be working on new music together. It feels like we’re receiving rock ‘n’ roll radio waves from across the galaxy. Not sure what that means? Well, keep listening to our new songs and you’ll find out!

How are you preparing for your upcoming SXSW showcases?

We’ve been practicing and packing. Oh and we’ve been saving room in our stomachs so we can eat lots of delicious Texas BBQ while we’re at SXSW.

Will you be playing any new material at SXSW?

I think so, but we’ll decide on the set list before our showcases. I think we’re a much different band than we were four years ago. We’re looking forward to showing people how much we’ve grown and changed since the last time we performed at SXSW.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are playing overseas than you do when you’re playing in Korea?

Not really. We’re the same people and have the same love of performing everywhere we go. We try and play with lots of energy no matter where we are too. However, SXSW is a massive party so maybe that will make us go even crazier on stage.

Aside from your new single and upcoming appearance at SXSW, what else is happening in Galaxy Express’ world?

As we mentioned before, we put out a new single on March 11 called “The Way.” You can find it on iTunes. And we’ll be playing shows and working on new music all year long.  This week is also the one-year anniversary of our manager Myoungshin Ki’s death. When he died last year it was incredibly sad and we all miss him a lot. Helping each other after his passing pulled us together all together, and I think we’ve become a stronger and more solid band because of it. So now kind of feels like another new start for Galaxy Express.

Here is Galaxy Express’ scheduled at SXSW:

March 17 Austin, TX (9:30 pm – 10:10 pm)@The Belmont (K-Pop Night Out)

March 18 Austin, TX (1:00 am – 1:40 am) @ Barracuda Backyard
