INTERVIEW: Astronomyy

Hi A, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Not bad at all. EP out and playing a great show the other day in London – gnas. Enjoying life!

Can you talk to us more about your latest EP?

It’s a collection of songs that I have written as a miniature story – and people can interpret it differently. I wanted to start the EP off with a bang, something in your face like the hypnotized vide. It sums up a relationship at the time, and it goes through all of those processes like infatuation, confusion, and perhaps the end of a relationship – depending on how you look at it.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

It’s about different people, some are friends that are really hard to stay in touch with and some are relationship. I wanted it to signal a phase of my life, moving on and growing up.

How was the film experience?

I came across a guy on instagram who I really rated. Let’s see how Hollywood we can go on a budget. I loved working so closely with him, and making something so early on in our careers. I want to work together again.

How was the recording and writing process?

Pretty lonely to be honest – because I do it all on my own! But I just love it. I’ve worked with other people but I think I prefer working alone.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are producing or collaborating for someone else rather than when you are writing for your own?

Not really. It depends if they wanted something different from the song – but usually we would work together and create something with both of our skills and strengths.

Influenced by a wide range of genre – how do you tend to blend them together or does one genre shines out the most depending on the lyrics’ theme?

I grew up listening to so many different types of genres so it just comes naturally to me. You sometimes start a song thinking it’s going in a certain direction, and then you release it and people think it’s a completely different genre! I really like the label surf-pop, but there are loads that could describe my music.

What aspect of paradise did you get to explore on this record?

Working on music and being in the zone!

Any plans to hit the road?

I would love to, but for now I’m focusing on the studio.

What else is happening next in Astronomyy’s world?

Lunar Surf Records stuff – releasing things off of my own label for other artists. I want to be a catalyst for other musicians. Other than that I want to keep releasing loads of music.
