SINGLE REVIEW: Bet On Me by Kanisha K

“Bet On Me”, the latest single from pop chanteuse Kanisha K, represents the next quantum leap forward in her so-far brief career. Kanisha has experienced tastes of success with preceding singles that charted high, but “Bet On Me” has all the necessary agreements to carry this performer higher than ever before. The wilds of Midwestern Michigan aren’t particularly known, outside of Motown, for producing bonafide pop stars; it’s a land where the airwaves are traditionally dominated by blue collar rock and country. Kanisha K, however, is a bonafide pop star already in the making and growing in stature with each successive single release. Everything is here – the songs, great vocals, a superb well-rounded presentation. “Bet On Me” is a fine achievement by any standard and sets the stage for her future by continuing her string of dramatically compelling material. Producer Joe Vulpis (and co-writer of this track) has provided her with the best possible forum and she makes great use of it.

There is a sort of blue collar aesthetic guiding Kanisha’s vocals, but it’s accompanied by a tremendous sense of style active from the start. The style gives shape and definition to her unquestionable passion and she shows great mastery over her phrasing. The true joy, however, is listening to her pinpoint phrasing. She knows exactly when to exert more muscle, when to pull back, and the decision she makes in this area crown the tune with an enormous amount of internal drama. Her phrasing, furthermore, brings the emotions of the song to vivid life – it sounds like her entire existence hinges on the hope that someone places their faith in her, but it never panders. Instead, Kanisha sounds like she will survive one way or another, but it won’t be without an emphatic stand on what means the most to her.

The musical arrangement reflects every bit of the passion heard in Kanisha’s vocal, but it also never fails to show the same tastefulness. Everything is kept to decent length, never over-elaborating or over-extending any particular passages, and the emotional notes struck by the music never fail to match up with what Kanisha is doing vocally. The drumming on this track is the hinge upon which everything swings – the changes in the song wouldn’t reverberate nearly as much without the expertly timed turns taken by the percussion. It has a slow evolving elegance outstripping everything, no matter its quality, that’s come before in Kanisha’s relatively brief career. “Bet on Me” resolves itself, both musically and lyrically, in such a tidy way that it’s difficult for anyone to feel unsatisfied by its development. This is a song that never over reaches for effects and, instead, garners much of its attention through sheer sincerity alone. Kanisha K’s latest single “Bet on Me” serves notice to anyone remaining unconvinced that she has a transformational talent, taking relatively commonplace musical ideas and songwriting emotions and elevating them to something greater, that far outpaces anything her peers are currently doing.
