We’re good, thank you very much! We hope everyone at VENTS and your readers are just as good, if not better than we are doing at the moment!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Another Life”?
Well, we took a slightly different approach to our music when we pieced the song together. It still has all the hallmarks of a lightcraft tune, but I adopted a different approach to the lyrics and we also added live trumpet and flugelhorn lines. And the track includes an outro that we’re still quite surprised we came up with!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was basically inspired by the terrible plight that has befallen immigrants and refugees from the Middle East in recent times – and from around the world in general (there are a lot of Indonesians who are suffering from the same fate both domestically and across the globe) – but from the perspective of a love-struck couple who are striving to attain a better life in a foreign land.
Why did you choose to name your EP after this track in particular?
For us, the song stood out the most amongst the five tracks on the EP. I we think it is the perfect song to represent the transition between our previous album, “Colours of Joy,” and our upcoming third full-length album.
How was the recording and writing process for your Another Life EP?
It was the first time in more than seven years where we wrote and recorded at the same place, and it was the first time that we did so in our hometown of Jakarta, so it was quite an experience. We could feel a sense of togetherness during the whole process, which we believe is crucial. To work with a new producer at a different studio was also fantastic as it meant we were working under unfamiliar yet enjoyable circumstances. It really brought us closer as both friends and as a band.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
From everything that’s happening around us and around the world, and from what we go through in life personally as well. Everyone’s life is a film waiting to be produced, with all the dramas and intricacies that develop in each person’s journey, and it is magical if we could connect with that.
How are you preparing for your SXSW showcase?
We’ve been putting in the hours practicing and perfecting our set and just making sure that we’re all ready for the big day. It is a very big deal for us to be able to play SXSW because it is basically one of the biggest music events in the world – especially when we’re a group of nobodies from a country so far away! We want to make sure that we make our mark at SXSW, put a smile on everyone’s faces, and make them all fall in love with our music. We are nervous but very excited as well!
Any plans to play any new material at SXSW?
Yes! We have a couple of new songs that we have yet to play anywhere else, and although it might be a bit of a gamble, we are pretty confident that they are good enough to blow people’s minds. If they don’t, well, we will just have to work harder then!
Do you tend to take a different approach when you play overseas at a large festival like SXSW as opposed to when you’re just touring and playing regular club shows?
Despite the difference in venue size and atmosphere, we always take the same approach to every single show that we do. That ensures that we project who we are as a band at every opportunity. However, it goes without saying that we have to adjust our stage act when it comes to festivals and larger shows. Yet our approach mentally remains the same.
Aside from your upcoming appearance at SXSW, what else is happening in lightcraft’s world?
We are hoping to be able to secure a tour or two and a few local and international festivals to keep promoting our “Another Life” EP, test-drive our new songs, and continue to share our music with a wider audience. At the same time, we are currently preparing all the new material that we have for our upcoming third album, which we hope to release either in late 2017 or early 2018. We have been road-testing some of the tracks for quite a while now, and the reception that they have been getting has been good, so we’re really excited about it!
