Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Soul Run”?
– Soul Run is about liberating yourself from whatever stifles your growth. In life. Something (and in this case) someone that keeps you from being your truest self.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
-Well, yes. I can talk/laugh about it now but I was in a relationship that was mentally and emotionally debilitating and decided to make a run for it…by stealing my ex’s truck. lol. But I didn’t get very far because I don’t know how to drive a manual vehicle!! Had to call my brother to pick me up.
How was the filming experience on the video? -It was a blast! Taha Muharuma and Shanik T are quite skilled in their craft and I basically gave them the song, they came up with a treatment, I loved it and we filmed shortly after. It was a lot of fun shooting on public transit, near landmarks and neighbourhoods in Toronto. I love this city.
Why name the album after this track in particular?
It was the first song we recorded and the title seemed to fit the direction the album was heading.
How was the recording and writing process?
The song was produced by my closest friend Matt ‘Emdee’ Reid. I LOVED the song/sound and that’s where my inspiration for the whole album began. The writing process was often a collaboration with a couple well versed friends of mine, incredible writers and emcees. We’d listen to the tracks, they would ask how it made me feel or what memory does this particular song stir in you, I’d proceed to tell them certain experiences and the rest is history!
What inspiration does Patti Labelle and Stevie Wonder bring to your music?
Patti Labelle is powerful. A force. Stevie Wonder’s harmonies and the way he makes one feel with his lyrics and voice..
How does acting influence your music and the other way around?
Acting has brought a certain confidence that I REALLY needed. Every time I perform, my nerves get the better of me and after every show, I always feel I can do better. Same with acting/singing You learn lines and try out different ways of presenting your character or you sing certain lyrics in a song with, perhaps, more feeling and I don’t know…Trial and error..Testing out the way you perform live, on the spot. You have no idea how you’ll be received. It’s scary.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Life. I just tell it like it is. Swears and all.
Any plans to hit the road?
Absolutely. I just got off the road with a theatre piece that i’m in called ‘Freedom Singer’ and just found out it’s been that a bunch of fall dates have come in. In the meantime, I’ll be playing festivals in North America and hoping to head out for Europe soon too.
