Hi Ryan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
So good! Busy! But awesome.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Here It Goes'”?
Here It Goes is a song I wrote at the beginning of a transition period in my writing. I was at a place where I just needed to take a break from caring about the outcome, and focus on just writing stuff that felt great and honest to me. I wrote this one with my good friend Jeff Roach. I showed up and he had that track and the first words that came out of my mouth were “I don’t really care if this goes platinum or gold, I tell ya I swear I just want the truth to be told” and it just felt right, that idea is kind of the theme for my entire next phase of my career.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I think it was just from being exhausted from trying to fit in, if that makes sense. I just wanted to see what would happen if I trusted my own instincts and moved forward with that.
Any plans to release a music video for the single?
We are actually doing a full video for the next single which comes out March 10th, Church Boy. It’s a trip, I can’t wait for people to see it.
How was the recording and writing process?
The process for the new project has been a mix of me fully writing/producing/mixing and working with Jeff Roach, with him taking over the production and mixing, and us tackling the songs together. He’s not afraid to let me say bizarre things and he kind of encourages it, so we’re a good match haha
What role does Nashville plays on this album?
Huge role. The first 3 years in town I spent writing every day with people on music row, and I got to write with a lot of my heroes who have written a lot of my favorite songs, and learning the craft of a great lyric was crucial for this project. Before I moved to Nashville I mainly wrote alone, and I cared mostly about melody and music, but after being plugged in to the Nashville way for so long, lyrics have become just as important. I want to blend the integrity of a Nashville lyric with the hooky/catchy/intrigue of pop music. I couldn’t have even attempted that without the amazing people I learned from on the row.
Country has been developing many layers throughout the year – what aspect of this are you hoping to explore with you new pop sound?
I grew up in Man, West Virginia. I talk with a pretty severe country accent, and grew up surrounded by people who love country culture. There’s part of my DNA that will always be attached to that. With this new music, I didn’t really try to do anything other than what felt right to me. When you listen to the full project you’ll def hear some country influence, but mostly a blend of everything i loved growing up. R&B, Rap, Gospel, Pop, and Country.
How’s your new EP coming along?
It’s finished! At this point it’s just about narrowing down the 20-some songs that are contenders for this project and picking the right time to put it out.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Definitely before the spring is over!
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ve got a show next week in Nashville, and we are looking into opportunities to hit the road this summer. Hoping we find a great fit, and can get out there and play these songs for people!
What else is happening next in Ryan Lafferty’s world?
Just writing, and recording, and videoing and doing everything I know to do to get this music out there to people. Thanks for having me!!
