Hi Jex, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
-Hello & thank you for the opportunity! I’ve been hanging in there.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Guiding Light”?
-“Guiding Light” really represents my first move as an artist, so I hold it very close to me. I cowrote the song with Chris Cron the very first time we met, and the song just seemed to fall into place.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
-As a teenager, I wanted to be a light to people…but I struggled with that. One friend in particular I knew needed help, and the song really just expresses that desire I had to be a light in their life.
Any plans to release a music video for the single?
-Currently, there is a lyric video that I made up on YouTube. If the song were to blow up in the future, then I would love to make a video for it. I have so many ideas & concepts for it spinning in my head. Even if it didn’t hit big, I would still love to make a solid music video for it.
How was the recording and writing process?
-The whole process was awesome. At the time, I didn’t co write a lot, so it was new to me. Chris was incredibly easy to work with, and extremely talented. We wrote 4 songs together, and they just all seemed to fall into place. Again, Guiding Light the first song we wrote, and the one that just stuck with me. I went down to Nashville and recorded it with Matt Bronlewee. He was also very talented and wonderful to work with.
Any plans to hit the road?
-I would absolutely kill to tour around, but that will definitely come with time. This year I’ll probably play some gigs in the tri-state area (NJ, NY, & PA).
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are covering someone else music than when you are writing your own original material?
-Definitely. I find that I’m less invested when covering someone else’s music. My songs are personal to me, and I put my soul into each one I write. When I’m covering someone’s work, I can channel different emotions and use them to make it my own…but there is nothing like writing your own song.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s your new album coming along?
-YES! Lots of new material this year, but no album. At this point, I’m just spitting out singles to see where they take me.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
-Throughout the year, I’ll be releasing different ballads and pop tracks. Sometime in the spring, I’ll be putting out a pop joint that I’m really excited about. No set in stone release date at this point, but keep an eye out & ear open.
What else is happening next in Jex’s world?
-As stressful and crazy as pursuing this career path has been and will be, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have no clue what will be “happening next” ..but I’m taking it one day at a time, submerging myself in my music, and I am stoked to find out.
