INTERVIEW: Natalise +The Sunset Run

Hi Natalise, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great, thanks! We’re so pleased with the reception of the latest EP and video for “The Lucky Ones”

Can you talk to us more about your single “The Lucky Ones”?

“The Lucky Ones” is an ode to gratefulness. The video captures what it’s really about – remembering the small moments in life that really matter. It means a lot to us and we’re really proud of it.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

The song is deeply personal. A few years ago, two people close to me were diagnosed with cancer. It was a strange time. And then I went through a sort of health scare of my own. And it was at that time, I started reflecting and asking questions like, “What’s really important? What’s foundational in my happiness?” And at the end of the day, it comes down to (at least for me) love, relationships, and connection with others and the world at large.

How was filming the video?

It was really great. Andrew James Abajian was really lovely to work with. He has a thoughtful eye and a keen sense of story, which I appreciate.

The single comes off your new album Glimpses of the Sun – what’s the story behind the title?

“Glimpses of the Sun” is actually a lyric line from “The Lucky Ones.” The full line goes, “The one thing that I trust is the times when we were us / They’re like glimpses of the sun.” The idea is that in the moments when we are truly authentic, when we are truly ourselves – those are the moments that shine.

How was the recording and writing process?

I absolutely loved it. Writing and recording for me is like meditation and therapy wrapped in one. It is an out of body experience and makes me so happy! And working with the producers Ajax and Karyadi, along with the band was just spectacular. Every day in the studio is a gift with them. When everyone is so creative and talented, it’s amazing.

What role does Coldplay and Sigur Ros play in your music?

I have been very inspired by the thoughtfulness and creativity by which these two bands have written and created their music. If you allow yourself to be carried away, they both take you to another universe. My hope is that our music does the same.

What aspect of human struggles did you get to explore on this record?

On this record, the major themes are love, self-love, loss of love, and gratefulness.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely. We hope to be touring this summer and fall both within the US and in Europe.

What else is happening next in Natalise + The Sunset’s world?

We’re working on a new record called Constellations. We’re very excited as it is both a continuation of and evolution from Glimpses of the Sun.
