Wicked thanks, it’s good to be here with you. It’s been a very busy time recently – lots on with the record, club gigs and radio features – I’m in a good place right now.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Change”?
It’s an up tempo grime banger with a nod to the early days of dark UKG/Grime. With Blay on vocal duties, its been picked up and supported by heavyweights of the scene like DJ Target, Logan, Teddy Music and had rotation on Radio 1, 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, Radar Radio and more. it’s cool to make a record that resonates with people and theres been a lot of positive energy and kind words around the whole project. Feeling blessed out here!
How was the film experience?
Some see videos as a chore but I really enjoy them – the meeting of minds, the whole creative process – it’s sick to hear other peoples input and ideas. I reached out to good people in the LateralThinkers team – I’ve known Darren for years -, but this was the first music video we actually did together. With the record being recorded in Southampton we had to do it there and, much like with the record, it was all quite fluid and came together nicely- they did a wicked job.
How was the recording and writing process?
#Change is a record that really came together organically- I always find that gives the best results. I’d built the record and was thinking “who would this really work with?” and instantly thought of Blay – he was my first choice for it. We actually live close to each other now, he came through the studio laid down his vocals in almost one take and it just flowed. Even sat there in the control room I was gassed hearing him on it and we were both excited about the results!
How does your Radio Host background influence your music and the other way around?
Naturally your musical history will shape how you digest music, what inspires you, what you really feel. Radio wise – I’ve presented shows for over a decade now, been head of specialists at a commercial radio station and nowadays provide regular mixes for Charlie Sloth on 1Xtra as well as my own internationally syndicated radio show. The constant and varied exposure to new and innovative music [that I genuinely love] has fed into what I do in the studio. It always bring fresh, new ideas and new inspiration.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
#Change is off the Pineapple EP [out now] – which features Blay, Don Jaga and Strive. It contains 3 tracks encompassing different sides of hip hip/grime – #Change is grime, #SoHigh is what I call a “wavey” track” and #TopperTop is a trap/drill cut. Away from the EP, I’ve wrapped up a few remixes that will be dropping over the next month or 2 as well as plenty of free uploads ready for the club circuit via my soundcloud [https://soundcloud.com/j-fresh-official] I’m in the studio a few times every week and always working, building, creating and reaching out to the right artists who I think we would make some dope music together- so expect some fully original material from me too.
Any plans to hit the road?
Of course! My DJ diary is varied and exciting, taking me all over the UK with guest bookings. As summer creeps us – thats always an exciting time- we touch the festivals both here and abroad and hit Islands like Ibiza, Ayia Napa, Corfu etc. Lots in store!
What else is happening next in J Fresh’s world?
Consolidating what we’ve done so far and building and developing it further – it’s always important to work hard to progress and move forward. I’m blessed for whats happened since the turn of 2017, but this is only the first step. On the way I’ve got more records and more collabs with sick artists and producers- I’m excited to share with you when I can! It’s also humbling to receive some of the emails and phone calls that have been coming through recently – further fuel to keep working hard. I’ll happily sit down in a few months and chop it up with you again – keeping you fully up-to-date!
