Jamie Isaac hits the US for the first time this week and to celebrate he is releasing a ‘revisited’ version of his critically acclaimed Couch Baby. “Beauty” is Couch Baby’s most refined composition, pulsing balladry that tugs on your heartstrings with a dopey melody. His drawn vocals and understated production arc back to Chet Baker, Blossom Dearie and the golden age of 50s west coast jazz which he holds dear. It was chosen by Sporting Life (of NYC’s Letter Racer and former member of RATKING) to remix and then jumped upon by the Canadian rapper / producer Allan Kingdom (Kanye West, Flume and Jay Prince collaborator, 1/4 of Thestand4rd – Spooky Black et al). Sporting Life’s additional production gives the track a spiked backbone of trappy beats, and Allan Kingdom’s additional vocals give the somber original a newfound energy & momentum through fast spun raps & hooks.
These 2 tracks are the product of a long-standing trans-Atlantic cultural exchange; artists bound together through influence, style and an effervescent DIY-attitude. Collaboration with Letter Racer’s Wiki & Sporting Life comes full circle to south east London and the gang of friends that Jamie Isaac calls family. See his housemate, King Krule, who gave chorus to their old clique RATKING’s ‘So Sick Stories’, or Sub Luna City, who made beats for RATKING & then toured with Wiki, and then look to Jamie Isaac’s Loose Grip mixtape – which featured all of them, or his Boiler Room album launch party – which they all performed at.
Couch Baby Revisited will be released on March 17th and also includes an incredible cover of Alicia Keys’ “Un-thinkable,” a beautiful extension of his unique brand of soulful down-tempo electronica. The album can be streamed and purchased from this link.
