INTERVIEW: Kanisha

1) How would I classify my music?

It’s hard to say , I guess I would put it like this , If Joss Stone , Carrie Underwood and Aretha Franklin had a baby it would be me!

2) Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Alicia Keys, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse

3) What do you want fans to take from your music?

I want them to feel like my music and I are both very relatable and also that they are free to interpret my lyrics however they see or feel them.

4) How’s the music scene in your locale?

The music scene in Grand Rapids which is about 30 minutes from where I live is really huge! We have tons of major acts come through ,some of the best show’s I’ve seen have been there!

5) What’s the best concert you’ve been to?

My favorite show would probably be Aerosmith! Lenny Kravitz opened up for them and it was just a crazy electric vibe , it was at Van Andel Arena which is in Grand Rapids!

6) What do you most like about playing live?

My favorite thing about playing live is the feeling that comes over me. I get a rush of adrenaline , the nerves go away and I just let go! Sometimes I surprise myself with how I change when I hit the stage because before hand I’m always a nervous wreck but once I make my entrance and the band is vamping waiting for me it all goes away! After the show I almost feel like its an out of body experience and it feel like it all happens so fast but there is no feeling like it!

7) Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

I would have to say “Bet On Me” . The reason I picked that song is because it has evolved with me from the time I wrote it till now. When I wrote the song I was in a different place and it had a different meaning then , now I’m out of that situation but it has taken on a whole new meaning for another situation and that just shows how music and lyrics can be interpreted in so many ways. As a writer I never imagined that could happen since when you write a song you are writing about an initial subject or experience so this one is pretty special!

8) Have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

I most definitely have evolved . I have been doing a lot of writing in Nashville with some amazing writers and I see myself doing a lot more of that. I also think my sound has changed a lot I don’t think I will be singing much more pop music, I think ill be singing more fusion.

9) If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

I really would like to spend time with Shawn Mendes. He is so talented and seems so down to earth , I like his style , his voice, he can do anything! That would be a dream Collaboration for me!

10) What’s next for you?

I am going to be moving to Nashville to pursue more writing and get some demos done. I also will be working on my new sound and hopefully playing some great venues!
