INTERVIEW: Brit Daniels

Hi Brit, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! Thank you so much for the warm welcome! I have been great – just have been busy getting ready for the world to hear what I’ve been working on, so I’m unbelievably excited that it’s finally here!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Eulogy”?

Eulogy is an empowering break up anthem with a really cool dark pop vibe! I like to describe it as power pop to some people because it has Pop, Rock and EDM elements all mixed into one song. I love this song because it really talks about knowing your worth in a relationship and knowing it’s okay to let people go when they don’t appreciate you. The way this song is written is so unique and cool because it’s pretty much centered around your last words to the person who didn’t value you.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

What’s funny is I didn’t actually write this song to begin with. I went into a co-write here in Nashville with my friend Phil, and he was like “You have to hear this song I wrote with some friends the other day because it’s so your style”. So he played it for me, and I instantly fell in love with it because it was SO relatable to some of my past relationships. So, he gave me the okay to cut it. It wasn’t until I was in the studio out in LA that Phil and I went back & forth over the phone and through email and actually co-wrote a rewrite of some of the lyrics to make them better fit the direction we were going with the song, as well as tailor it a little more to me. This song was so relatable to what I’ve been through in the past though, so it was easy to come up with ideas when we started changing things during the rewrite. I’ve been single for quite some time as I’ve been solely focusing on my music for awhile, but when I was focusing a little more on the dating realm, I felt like every guy that I would date or “talk” to would be wonderful enough to lure me in, and then they’d start playing games. It’s through these experiences that I really learned my worth and to stand up for myself especially when it comes to relationships, so this song fits me to a T.

Any plans to release a music video for the single?

As of right now, we’re releasing a lyric video along side of the single. The lyric video actually has a very strong music video vibe. It has a lot of bright colors and is a creative performance video that adds such a strong visual to the song. As of right now, I’m not planning on doing another video for this particular single, but things can always change, so who knows 😉

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process was SO fun! It’s actually quite funny because I met my producer, Jordan, randomly one night at a late night eatery in LA. I went into his studio the next day, and he listened to the song and decided he wanted to work with me. From there, I started making regular trips to LA throughout the duration of the recording process, and our recording schedule varied so much- sometimes we were in the studio in the morning, sometimes just in the evening and sometimes we were there all day. Jordan was really awesome to work with because he was able to combine both of our visions for the song. I was really adamant about having some real, organic instruments mixed with a lot of programming, so all of the guitars that you hear on this track are real guitars. I think it definitely adds something unique to the vibe of the song. The recording process is one of my favorite things in the world because it’s so cool to see a song evolve from one stage to the next, and I always love working with new, talented and creative people. The part of the writing process that I was involved in was kind of strange since Phil and I were going back and forth with lyrics over email and the phone, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do when you’re both on different sides of the country. It worked surprisingly well though, and I couldn’t be more happy with how things turned out!

What role does Nashville play in your music and writing?

Nashville is such an awesome community to be a part of, and despite what people think, there’s a lot more here than just country music. The pop scene is definitely on the up and up here, and I’m constantly meeting new, cool people to collaborate with. I love this town because it’s very similar to where I grew up in Texas, so I feel like being here keeps me connected to my roots in some strange way and keeps me grounded. As much as I love LA, Nashville is a community where I feel like there are so many people in pop music here who really do want to see others succeed, so everyone is (for the most part) willing to write/collaborate and support each other in any way they can. I’m very fortunate to be able to spend time in both Nashville and LA though and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

It absolutely does 🙂 I’ve been writing with a producer here in Nashville, and I have some co-writes scheduled with some great people coming up that I’m really excited about. So, new music will definitely keep coming- you can bet on that! Also, it’s coming along great. I really love what we’ve been writing, and I should be getting back into the studio very soon!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

As of right now, the only release date I have had set is for Eulogy which releases February 17, 2017. Release dates for any future projects will be announced once the productions are finished and ready to go!

Any plans to hit the road?

As of right now, I don’t have any major tours planned, but I’m definitely planning on setting up [more] shows here in Nashville this year as well as LA. If any new touring or show opportunities arise though, I’ll definitely be jumping on those, as I love traveling and meeting all of the people who have been supporting me in my music!

What else is happening next in Brit Daniels’ world?

Next up in my world – I’ll be releasing a full length cover to one of my current favorite songs VERY soon. I’ll be continuing to work on new music with a few different, really awesome people. I’m headed back out to LA really soon where I’ll be working on some fun things. I’m one of those people who is constantly moving forward and working on new things, so more new, fun things could completely appear out of thin air as time goes on… that seems to be how things always happen, haha!
