Baby Queens Returns With New Single

The incomparable Cardiff 5-piece Baby Queens return with their new single, ‘Hear Me’, taken from their recent critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Baby Queens.’ Listen here.

With an evocative, hypnotic guitar line accompanied by a rhythm section that could be from the motor city  ‘Hear Me’ is another example of just how varied Baby Queens are. Cara explains, “musically it’s our take on Motown driven by a harder bassline more akin to Jungle”.

It’s a song about wanting to be heard” says Vanity.  “For example you could be working a 9-5, but secretly be an amazing dancer. Someone who’s a glass collector in a bar, but really they are a brilliant chef, but no one knows because that individual has never voiced it, but deep down in their heart they know what talents they possess but the rest of the world doesn’t know. It’s just wanting to be heard and to be understood.”

Previous single ‘Tired of Love’ won support from the likes of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. First premiering with Notion Magazine, the girls dropped the accompanying video exclusively with Clash, who called it “unashamedly pop, but delivered in an intelligent, intense manner.”  The single also caught the attention of The Guardian, who included them in the much coveted New Band of the Week spot, with high praise for the new album calling it “uniformly excellent.” They even won over The Sunday Times who featured the band as their ‘Breaking Act.’

Their debut album won glowing reviews across the board, heralded by everyone from Record Collector and The Daily Mirror to Metro, The Sun and Blues & Soul with comparisons being made to a variety of iconic artists and bands, including TLC, Massive Attack, En Vogue and SWV. Their success didn’t go unnoticed, with the BBC soon inviting the band to perform live on BBC 1’s Children in Need. The girls have also just been on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 show for a live session.

Baby Queens are Cara, Estelle, Monique, Ruth and Vanity. Five girls from Cardiff, two sisters, two cousins and their adopted sister, each equal parts songwriter, musician and music lover. As distinct in their fashion as they are their music, each band member’s individual personality and style can be heard in their music. The band first found success with their single ‘Red Light’ which won over fans and critics alike, fast becoming a viral hit and getting picked up by BBC Radio 1, who made them ‘Artist of the Week’. They’ve also had support from the likes of Huw Stephens, DJ Target, DJ Semtex and Mista Jam. Plus they were invited to record a live session for the BBC at Maida Vale. They’ve also had continuous support from BBC Wales, where they’ve been ‘Artist of the Week’, three times.

After ‘Red Light’ the girls quietly released more tracks whilst readying the album and cutting their teeth on the live circuit. They’ve played festivals like The Great Escape, Boomtown, T in the Park, X Fest, and Swn festival (Huw Stephen’s own festival) and toured with Welsh super band The Earth (ft members of Catatonia/Super Furry Animals).
