INTERVIEW: Harper Starling

Hi Harper, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Well hello VENTS!!! Thanks so much for having me! I’m super pumped to be doing this interview. You guys are totally fabulous by the way.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Disco Mirror Dream”?

Disco Mirror Dream is a sugary and fun dance pop song for just about anyone. It’s my way of saying that when the world gets you down, there’s always a place to escape to. I wanted to transport people to a place where they would be embraced and loved 100% for who they are. A judgment free zone filled with glitter, sequins, disco balls, unicorns, and lots of candy. These days, we all need an alternative earth. Welcome to Planet Disco.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Absolutely! The song came to me when I was with my sister Ashley and one of my all time best friends at a gay bar, conveniently called Mad Planet.  It is my #1 place to go when I’m home in Milwaukee. They have a massive disco ball in the center of the dance floor and at one point that evening I remember “You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive was playing. I looked up at the disco ball and everything just clicked. I was in my happy place. My dream world. I was literally on Planet Disco and wanted to share that with others.

How was the film experience?

It was amazing! I got to work with legendary director John Engstrom, who’s work with Britney Spears, Cyndi Lauper, and David LaChapelle, among many other artists that I truly admire. It was a day filled with glitter exploding above my head, non-stop dancing under a disco ball, playing dress up with countless outfits, and having my very own sets created. I’ll never forget it. It was a fabulous experience getting to work with such a positive, hard working, and upbeat crew. None of it felt like work to me. They really believed in my message. Even the most tough and stoic crew guys were laughing by the end of the day. I’m so passionate about my music and the vibe of everyone present made filming so special and easy.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was a blast! I’ve been writing and performing for years. I brought the idea for Disco Mirror Dream to Aimee Proal, the superstar writer that I’ve been working with and who’s collaborated with artists like Kelly Clarkson and Sia. She helped me turn the song into the epic dance anthem it deserved to be. I was honored to produce the track with Steve Daly (One Direction, Sia, Pink) who put me through gymnastics just to do vocals. He had me running around his studio jumping and dancing. He even joined in at parts. Also, pretty sure he and my dad had a bromance thing going on that day! It was so damn cute. Overall, the process has been exactly like the song says. It was a dream.

What role does Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper plays in your music?

Great question! I have been obsessed with Cyndi Lauper since I heard “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” for the first time. She is a quirky, spunky, and sassy pioneer. Her confidence as an artist and the message she’s given to the world are not only inspiring, they are timeless. On Planet Disco, she’s be my cool aunt. As for Lady Gaga, she’s my idol. I fell in love with her from the moment I saw her perform an acoustic version of “Poker Face.” I’ve been a fan every step of the way and admire that she always gives 110% no matter what. She pours her heart and soul into her art, which is something I aim to achieve. She creates a cohesive world between her music and visuals and manages to do so in a way that is iconic and pushes boundaries. I aspire to do the same.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Oh you can definitely expect to see new material! Actually, I just shot the music video for my second single in December called Starburst Heart. It has the same energy and sparkle that Disco Mirror Dream has with a lot more sugar. There are many little surprises in the video and I can’t wait to show it to everyone!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Starburst Heart will be released in late spring as well as a few surprises along the way. We are working on a full length EP to be released later this year.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely! My team and I are working on a series of live shows to be announced very soon! I can’t wait to tell everyone!

What else is happening next in Harper Starling’s world?

In addition to the EP and single releases I have planned, there are also a few collaborations in the works including one with a huge artist I’ve always admired. This will be announced on social media and my website! You can sign up for updates and news there as well as find out more about my love in action group, The Rainbow Brigade, which is an organization I started to spread more love and positivity into our communities, one person at a time. We are always looking for new love ambassadors to join us!
