INTERVIEW: Bonsai Mammal

Hi Jimmy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great thank you!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Alligator”?

After I was done working, sometimes I would just make some music to relax and entertain myself. After awhile a few of those tracks stuck out and started to feel like they amounted to something.  I felt compelled to release something. Alligator encompassed a lot of what I wanted to communicate  with Bonsai Mammal. In a sense it felt a bit like a mission statement.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Truthfully is was really inspired a lot by ARCA and his productions. I love what he does with his beats and textures. I wanted to do something like that with a more melodic edge.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’m thinking about it. I do have a concept I like a lot but there is another EP coming in the fall so I may save the video for that.

The single comes off your new self-titled EP – why naming the album after the band?

The EP was self titled because I felt in a way it was sort of a coming out party for the Project. The next EP will have a proper name.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was super easy because I was only dealing with my self and there weren’t any time constraints so I could do what I wanted and chip away at it until I was satisfied. It’s awesome making music having to answer to no but yourself.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are writing or producing someone else than when you are working on your own material?

Of course. Usually when I writing with and producing other artists. It’s all about amplifying their musical vision and personality. So while it’s super fun, creative and inspiring to do it in the end, It is all about the person you’re working with. When I’m working on Bonsai Mammal it’s just me. For better or for worse.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs?

Just trying to make music I love and trying to follow my muse.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’ll be DJing out this spring a bit to promote the record in Los Angeles, London and Berlin after that we will see.

What else is happening next in Bonsai Mammal’s world?

It’s exciting because it’s something totally new for me. So for the moment releasing the EP and trying to make people aware of it. There will be another EP in the fall with a vocal feature or 2 and then an album next year.
